A Guide to Choosing Sugar-Free Gums

Invented by a man called Samuel W. Wragg, the gum was developed to control the tooth decay suffered by workers who labored with high temperatures and chemicals in the hot, dry heat of tobacco pits. It was a way of preserving the tooth enamel that the tobacco did not destroy. The gum was designed to be used in a similar way to the tobacco pits. Instead of the worker having to suck on a stick dipped in chewing tobacco, he would place his hand in a pit, cover it with the gum, and use his teeth to pull out a portion of the pits.

Today the name gumbo is almost a household word. However, it originated in Chicago and became famous across the United states and in England. Originally, the chocolates we know today came from the South and was called Carolina gumbo. The name was given to the chowders after a dispute over trademark rights between a man named Samuel H. Wragg and a company called Wrigley Brothers, makers of Wragg's chocolate.

The name "chocolate gumbo" is based on the flavor of the gumbo and the brandy or spirit of the chocolates. Doublemint gumbo is deep orange-red and sometimes includes fresh jalapenos. It has a thick consistency that makes it easy to roll and it has a hard, pungent taste reminiscent of ripe jackfruit. A thicker consistency of this gumbo has a sweeter taste and is used to dip fresh tortillas or corn chips. A popular choice for hot dogs and hamburgers, Chicago style gumbo can be served at almost any American restaurant.

In addition to the soft, rich flavor, chocoholics (people who eat a lot of chocolates) also need extra help for their teeth. Since chocoholics often have diets high in sugary foods like candies and cookies, they usually end up with cavities or gum disease. Fortunately, chocoholics do not have to forsake their favorite chocolates to get dental help. There are plenty of sweets out there that are made with sugar-free gum and it is possible to use these to prevent gum disease or cavities. Most health food stores and office supply stores carry sugar-free gum for people to buy.

When it comes to chewing gum, the most well known American brand is Quillicut. This brand is both tasty and healthy - not to mention delicious. The flavors available (in the US, at least) include lemon mint, doublemint, cinnamon toast, and spearmint. There is even a non-chocolate version called Spearmint Swizzle Gum that is gaining in popularity.

One of Quillicut's biggest competitors is Rimmie, which also makes sugar-free chewing gum. Like Quillicut, Rimmie is both delicious and nutritious. While the price is a bit higher than other brands, it pays off in the long run because sugar-free Rimmie gum can keep you from getting cavities and is better for your breath than regular sugar-free gum. In addition to being sugar-free, Rimmie is hypoallergenic, making it safe to use even for those who have allergies or sensitive mouths. In the United States, Rimmie products are sold in health food stores, and in many grocery stores.
