Baking Pies
Pastry is a spongy dough of shortening, water, flour and sugar that can either be sweetened or savoury. Sweetened pastries can also be defined as homemade confectionery usually presented in sweetened form. The word "pastry" actually refers to many types of baked sweet goods made of different ingredients like sugar, eggs, flour, milk, butter and shortening. They may also contain fruit, nuts, raisins, spices and other dry ingredients.
There are different types of pastry doughs. Pastry Doughs made of whole wheat flour contain more gluten. Flour is the major ingredient for producing gluten free pastries and baked goods. Whole wheat flour contains higher fat content and so are better for people with high blood sugar conditions. The higher fat content in the whole wheat pastry dough reduces the likelihood of developing diabetes and other associated health issues.
There are different varieties of flour suitable for different types of baking. For example, quick breads or pizzas need a different kind of flour than the ones used for making biscuits. While quick breads or pizzas need a higher fat content, biscuits require a lower fat content and so are best suited for those with a diet low in fats. Whole wheat pastry and biscuits are made by mixing together a combination of flour and butter. Shortening is another key ingredient in making pastry and baked goods. It is derived from coconut oil and uses starch, as in potato starch, to give it the characteristic short crumb and even chewier texture.
A French pastry blender is a mechanical device that liquefies the flour and butter mixture. The resulting liquid is then added to the rest of the ingredients in the pastry. The final stage of this process, which is the addition of the sugar, can be achieved using the hand crank pastry blenders. A motor driven by a gasoline engine or electricity is used to power these pastry blenders.
If you want to master the art of making French pasty, consider taking a pastry chef course. Several schools offer them across the country. They provide you with the expertise you need to create delicious and mouth watering pasty designs and to bake them. As a pastry chef you can also take advanced courses that focus on specific areas such as creating your own desserts or making pies.
You can also focus your efforts on making other kinds of pastries like angel food cake, cream puffs, and biscotti. These are great pastry projects that are loved by children. However, if you prefer to create fresh made pasty, you may use ready-to-use pastry cream.
