Chewing Gum - Does it Have to Be All Artificial Sweeteners Or All Natural?

We've all heard of the dangers of chewing on gum. Gum can cause halitosis (gum disease), cavities, bleeding gums, and teeth sensitivity. And of course, the candy that we're all addicted to, too! So is there anything good about them? Let's find out.

Gum

Chewing gums (also known as "chicle") is a soft, malleable substance designed specifically to be chewed, without being swallowed. Modern gum consists of gum cover, hardener, sugar, flavors, plastics/hardeners, colors, and usually a hard or plastic coating. When you bite into it, the "stickiness" gives you a little bit of a sugary shock that sends your saliva shooting towards your mouth to neutralize the sugar in your blood. The taste is usually bitter or sour, depending on what you've eaten.

Bubble gum, on the other hand, is not made from actual gums at all. It is made from a variety of compressed air-filled pellets that are shaped like a bubble. As you chew on the little pellets, they fill up with air and expand, releasing their "bubble-like" flavor and scent. These gums are most commonly found in restaurants, but some people also enjoy popping them occasionally to release their "secret scent".

The biggest difference between the two is how the gum is stored. A table top version is more easily stored away while a gumball equivalent can be stored almost indefinitely in an airtight container. In addition, gum base ingredients are much more likely to deteriorate over time. However, if you have access to the gum base ingredients, you may prefer to use them for your own consumption.

All in all, there really isn't a huge difference between the three main types of chewing gum. If you're going to start chewing, get accustomed to all three. That way, you're going to have a better idea which one works best for you. And if you get stuck with no choice but to purchase, make sure you stick with a brand that's known for good taste, excellent ingredients, and long shelf-life.

There are some situations where you absolutely must use all natural, organic, or artificial sweeteners. Most candy bars and other sweets are thick with polyol sweeteners and other intense sweeteners. If you can't avoid these completely, at least try to keep a look out for the warning on the back of the container. You can also try switching to natural, organic alternatives as polyol sweeteners have a tendency to leave a residue behind that some people will not handle very well. Last, but not least, try to check labels frequently for words like "low calorie," "no calories," and "low fat." These are clear indications that the gum or other product is made with real sugar, not a polyol or other advanced sugar.
