Decorate Your Cupboards With Retro Candy For Halloween
When you think of retro candy, one of the first images that probably comes to mind is candy store booths. That might be because that's all retro candy store candy is: old-time candy stores, with their rows of familiar candy, looking more like candy shops than shops that sell chocolate! And that's exactly right - candy store booths are great retro candy gifts. They will bring back childhood memories for any age group.
But when we think of retro candy, the images of 1950s carnival candy bars spring to mind. And that's just fine. Vintage candy bar selections are vintage, but retro candy range far beyond that: they s a colorful array of old-fashioned sweet favorites that will take you back in time, remind you of when you first got Pop Rocks, taint your taste buds with traces of sugar and take you back through the decades on the way to today. The best thing about these sweet treats is that you can get them almost anywhere, from a candy store (if you remember those!) to your very own front porch.
And retro candy sticks are just as great, if not better than the latter. So, let's talk about those sweet sticks. A candy stick is a small hollow cylinder made of a blend of sugar and petroleum jelly or waxes. Candy sticks come in a wide variety of shapes and flavors, and even as novelty gifts or party favors, they can be customized with names, messages, and even photographs. What's more, you can get candy cigarettes, too.
If you're thinking of giving a candy gift or stocking stuffer, then these two candies would make good 'something' for any occasion. One of the most popular forms of homemade candy today are the homemade candy buttons. These little 'sticks' have colorful paint on the inside and are tied around with freezer paper. They may come in all kinds of shapes, including hearts, stars, zodiac signs, or just plain circles. When you buy them in the store, they come in pre-pasted circulars that you cut and paste yourself.
However, the great news is that you don't really need a store-bought version to create retro homemade candy buttons. Instead, what you need is some hydrogen peroxide, food coloring, and some colored cellophane. All you need to do is melt down the hydrogen peroxide into a container (we'll get to that in a moment) and then lay down the food coloring into the center of the melted 'stick'. You can use this to decorate your homemade candy buttons, as well as tie them onto string them along the edges of bottles and packages. There are endless possibilities!
Another fun idea for candy buttons is to make 'nose candy' by folding a piece of tissue paper into half-inch pieces. You simply tie one end of the folded tissue paper to a long piece of string and twist both ends together. Then you simply tie the other end of the tissue paper to the string. When you pull on the string, it will form a shape of your nose! This is particularly nice if you've got a young kid at home who loves the cartoon character Garfield.
Another fun idea for decorating bags and jars is to make your own edible 'junkie' jewelry. Junkie jewelry has become a huge hit over the past few years. It originated in San Diego, California, but has now spread to other states and even countries such as Italy and Japan. In fact, many people now collect antique junkie jewelry for their own home collections. To make these jewelry pieces, you simply need to melt down some food coloring, some edible starches (such as Carboprotein), and a few drops of black licorice paint.
Retro candy is not only a great way to spruce up your celebrations, it's a fun craft to do in-between family dinners or when playing night games. Homemade candy is an inexpensive way to make your children smile every time they see the container. Not only that, it is also better for you to hand pick and choose exactly what you like to put inside the candy. The great thing about this craft is that you can find retro candy in all kinds of fun containers so you won't have to worry about running out of shapes to use.
