Essential Oil Uses - Peppermint

Peppermint is a hybrid between spearmint and watermelon. Native to Europe and the Middle East, this aromatic plant has become widely grown and distributed in many areas of the globe. However, it is only sometimes found in the wild containing only the pepper version.

There are numerous studies published on the subject of peppermint. All show that peppermint has anti inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Peppermint has been used for cough and cold treatment since ancient times. A study published in the May-June 2021 editions of Journal of Medicinal Herbalism reported that peppermint oil moderately reduced the intensity and frequency of cough in children. In another study, peppermint oil was suggested to be useful in reducing upper airway pressure caused by allergies.

A study published in Clinical Biochemistry showed that peppermint oil can prevent and relieve inflammation associated with Crohn's disease. Another study published in Clinical Chemistry showed that peppermint essential oil can destroy yeast. Peppermint has been used since ancient times for the treatment of gastrointestinal tract diseases and to treat stomach disorders, including ulcers. In addition, it is believed to act as an anti-viral, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agent.

Peppermint is believed to increase blood flow, increase sweating and relieve congestion. Peppermint essential oil is indicated for treating skin problems such as eczema and dermatitis, as well as headaches and depression. A study published in Alternative Therapies showed that peppermint oil is effective in treating menstrual cramps. While there are no serious side effects associated with peppermint oil, allergic reactions may occur; therefore, it is recommended that the oil be diluted before applying.

A study published in Clinical Toxicology demonstrated that peppermint oil is safe when used as directed for use on the skin, but should not be used undiluted on the skin. For pregnant women, or individuals suffering from lung disease, peppermint oil should not be used as it contains capsaicin, which could be toxic in large doses. Individuals using Peppermint for cough and cold symptoms should not use the essential oil while concurrently using other medications such as acetaminophen, NSAIDs, and bronchodilators. It should also not be used with alcohol as Peppermint can act synergistically with alcohol.

Peppermint oil has been used traditionally for treating a range of conditions and is also an ingredient of many over the counter products. Peppermint oil is available in a pure form, capsules and concentrated extracts. Capsules are preferred as it has more medicinal value than the concentrated extract, although both forms are useful in their own right. The essential oil can be purchased from a variety of sources, both over the counter and from specialty shops.
