Gum Disease - Can Gum Treatment Solutions Help?

We've all seen them: those candy-flavored gum drops that come in handy when you're stuck between the last crunch of the candy and the pop of it. I'm sure you know what I'm referring to, but what I'm also going to tell you is that they are called gum, not candy. The gum you're chewing is certainly handy, but you shouldn't be eating it while eating a lot of other sugary foods. It's only one of a few reasons, but chewing gum isn't nearly as healthy as, say, drinking eight glasses of water per day or taking supplements. We'll talk about that next time, though.

Chewing gum is actually quite a cohesive, tactile substance designed specifically to be chewed with no swallowing. Modern gum is made up of gum base, sugar, additives, fillers, herbs/chewables, and, more typically, some type of powdered or hard polyol coating. Most gum is consumed as a finished product, with the chewing gum already attached to the end of the stick. (And don't think for a second that all brands of gum are the same! Some brands of chewing gum are made with different fillers than others.)

Let's talk about the actual gum itself. Most brands of gum are made from the sap of various trees around the world, and it's these "gums" that provide the bulk of the chewing activity. They're made from a combination of resins and gumbo wood, which provides the flavor. There are also gums that are made from the bark of the evergreen camellia tree. In addition to the regular gums you find in stores, gum can also be found in the form of strips, pouches, or jars. (I like to have a mixture of both in my desk at work: one with the regular gum, and one with the chewable gums.)

The purpose of gums has varied over the years. For centuries in Europe, the gum was often used as an abrasive to scrape dishes clean before meals (and was even prescribed by physicians to prevent bleeding during childbirth! ), as well as a means of relieving toothache by chewing on the exposed roots. For dental purposes, however, gums were primarily used as a way to remove plaque from the teeth.

It's important to know whether the toothpaste you're using is suitable for your gum line or not! I've read many times that certain toothpaste can be harmful if ingested, so always read the label. Some studies also indicate that a certain type of chewing gum can also be toxic to dogs and cats. So check the label, and make sure you and your family stay away from it!

Gums provide a number of health benefits. They reduce bad breath, are a great way to help your children develop good oral hygiene habits, and act as an oral message, reducing gum disease. So make sure you're getting your gums and teeth regularly inspected and cleaned by your dentist. It's important!
