Gum Disease - Warning Signs to Look For

Gum

Gum disease (Gum Recession), also known as periodontal disease (Gumectaecus ex-cursus), is a severe gum infection that destroys the tissue and, in the long run, can even destroy the bone that support your permanent teeth. Gum disease can result in tooth loss, loosening of teeth, and cavities. Gum disease can occur on anyone from young to old. Prolonged exposure to saliva, especially on soft-tissue areas such as the face, lips, and gums, can promote the growth of bacteria and other organisms that can produce periodontal disease and periodontitis, a condition where gums are inflamed. You may have to try several treatments before you get results.

Smoking is one of the leading causes of Periodontal diseases, because cigarette smoking accelerates the rate at which the tissues are broken down. People who smoke also are more likely to develop gum problems than nonsmokers. Cigarette smoking and chewing tobacco are bad for your breath as well.

Symptoms of gum disease include gums that feel tender, swollen, and may notice bleeding while brushing, and receding gums. Other symptoms may include swelling of gums, particularly around the base of the tooth. Gum infection symptoms tend to get worse in the presence of cold temperatures, particularly when you are ill, so you may notice that bleeding while cleaning your teeth is a common sign of an infection. Sometimes a bad odor or a bad taste in the mouth is associated with gum infections as well. The presence of pus or liquid may confirm the diagnosis of gum infection.

When it comes to prevention of gum line infections, you need to avoid smoking and planing on how you will brush and floss. Plan on visiting your dentist every six months to have your teeth cleaned. Make sure you remove tartar, which is hard deposit that hardens over the years, from your teeth and plaque can build up along the gum line if you don't remove it.

Also, avoid clenching your teeth during brushing. Teeth that are not worked on properly are more likely to gather plaque and tartar. You should brush your teeth twice daily, once in the morning and once at night. Make sure you use a soft bristled toothbrush and floss frequently. Regular dental checkups and cleanings are also important.

Although most people don't associate a bad breath problem with gum disease, loose teeth can also bleed easily. You should make sure your toothbrush is properly set and your toothpaste doesn't contain any abrasive ingredients. You may notice blood on your toothbrush handle or between the teeth as you brush.
