Gum Disease and Gingivitis - Is Gum Disease Causing Your Circulatory Problems?
Signs and symptoms of gum disease may include: swollen or inflamed gums, signs and symptoms of periodontal (gum) inflammation including: red, inflamed or sore gums. Bright red, purple, bright orange or yellow gums. Smells like baking bread. Gum that losing its bristles easily while brushing or flossing.
Gum disease is not a disease that only affects people with diabetes. It can affect anyone from young to old. Prolonged exposure to alcohol, smoking, high blood pressure, viral infections, medications and poor oral hygiene can result in gingivitis or periodontal disease. Gum inflammation is commonly associated with diabetes because of the glucose in the bloodstream.
There are many different treatments for periodontal disease. However, the symptoms of gingivitis and periodontitis cannot be prevented. In order to prevent gum inflammation, you need to take a close look at the foods that you are eating and make sure that you are brushing and flossing at least twice each day.
The bacteria that cause periodontal pockets thrive on plaque. When you eat hard, chewy, crunchy foods, the bacteria burrow deep into the gums, under the gumline and between the teeth. As the gums become inflamed, tooth decay occurs. This will result in gingivitis and other periodontal pockets.
You can prevent periodontal disease and gingivitis by practicing good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth after meals and after snacks. Use dental floss to clean between your teeth and floss daily. Practice healthy gums by brushing with a toothbrush that is fitted with soft bristles and not too rough.
If you have diabetes and/or are at risk for heart disease, your oral health needs to be very good. Be sure to visit your dentist regularly and get professional cleaning. A great, healthy mouth is the best start you'll ever have in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight!
If you suffer from severe gum disease and gingivitis, you may also experience a loss of taste. This is because the bacteria responsible for periodontitis and periodontal pockets may attack other parts of your mouth, causing tooth loss. Tooth loss often occurs as a result of untreated gingivitis. It's important to seek treatment immediately if you experience tooth loss.
Gums that are left untreated and continue to remain in an unhealthy state will develop pockets and inflammation throughout your mouth. This will create a sticky film that will adhere to anything put in the mouth. This sticky film, which is commonly referred to as tartar, will continue to attract more bacteria as it grows. The bacteria will eat away at the inside of the tartar until it is unable to protect your gums any longer.
Periodontal disease and gingivitis are serious diseases that if left untreated will lead to further complications. Untreated periodontitis will increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. However, if you treat your periodontitis early, you will cut your risks of developing heart disease by half. This means that you could lower your risk of developing diabetes by up to 50 percent. In addition to lowering your risk of developing diabetes, you will also greatly lower your risk of developing several other systemic diseases.
