Gum Disease and Kids
What exactly is gum? Gingko is a Latin name meaning "gum tree". It is made from the gymnema sylvestre tree and a variety of other herbs, mostly Gingko. Gingko is made from a gourd that has been eaten since ancient times and has been credited with many medicinal properties. Modern research has shown that Gingko may help prevent gum disease and cavities.
Why would anyone want to chew on something made up of gum when more suitable alternatives exist? There are plenty of good reasons for chewing gum and it's likely that gum has even more beneficial uses than most people realize. Chewing gum provides significant amounts of saliva, which cleanses the mouth and eliminates built up bacteria. A gum stick can be used as a toothbrush by applying pressure over the plaque or tartar on teeth and gums, which cause painful cracking and bleeding. A person who regularly chews on gum has been shown to experience less plaque and halitosis.
In addition to its benefits for the teeth and gums, there are several varieties available in gumball form. The most well-known brands include Listerine, Snickers, Tootsie Roll, and Hot Tamales. These candy giants have been sued several times for being unsafe, especially if chewed and swallowed on a regular basis. In addition to the danger presented by candy in the mouth, there is also the danger of inadvertently swallowing gum if the candy is swallowed in the throat.
Some gum has a bitter taste and is better suited for adults than children. Gum made from sugar does not have the same affect on adults as candy. However, children should still be kept away from candy and gum if they have medical conditions that could affect their swallowing, such as swallowing a tube of medicine. A candy store in New York City store was recently sued because one of their candy products, Dentists Gum, had the bitter taste to it that caused people to spit it back into their mouths.
Gums that are intended to be eaten may have ingredients such as acetaminophen or aspirin in them. These medicines are commonly used by doctors to treat conditions such as headaches, stomachaches, allergies, and ulcers. If the candy is chewed and then swallowed, there is a good chance that the drugs will enter the blood stream and possibly result in liver problems. There is also the possibility that children may choke on the candy, which could lead to unconsciousness or death.
The dental hygienist who prepares teeth tray's brushes has had reports of patients choking on their gum during routine office visits. The American Dental Association has warned against giving candy, gum, mints, nut sticks, or sticky fingers to children. Children should be taught to chew gum or mints only after receiving instruction from a dentist. The dental hygienist should teach parents not to give their children sweets in any way, even by offering them raisins or candies.
