Hi-Chew - Is it a Real Candy?

Hi-Chew, a Japanese candy brand is known internationally for the high quality and variety of their candies. They are also a symbol of high quality to the Japanese people, since the company's founder used to say, "I only produce the best tasting sweets I can find." This company began in 1987 with only one store in both Japan and Hong Kong. Today Hi-Chew has stores in over thirty countries around the world.

Hi-Chew Incorporated is a privately held candy company based in America that started selling their Hi-Chews candy in the United States in 2001. Their products are manufactured in America and shipped all around the world. Their American distribution was originally based in Wisconsin, but since then they have expanded their business to include other states such as California, Maryland, New Jersey, Texas, Washington D.C., Florida, Georgia, Ohio and Illinois.

Most people have heard of the well-known sweet confectionary named "Tootsie Roll" or "Hakuro" from Japan. In America these two names refer to two different candy bars that come in various flavors. Hi-Chew in America markets candy coated almonds and has a variety of candies to suit any taste. In addition to their candy products Hi-Chew markets a Japanese fruit chew called "taichiro". The most famous product is their "hi-chew" which comes in five different flavors including strawberry, lemon, white chocolate, blueberry apple, and peach.

Hi-Chew also markets another Japanese fruit snack/candy called "7-Eleven". The name "7- Eleven" is an amalgamation of two Japanese words, "seven" and "eleven". This candies is similar in taste to Tootsie Roll, however it is less sweet. 7- Eleven is sold in seven different flavors such as lemon, raspberry, chocolate, and blueberry.

The giant Hi-Chew brand, which markets both the American version of the "taichiro" and the Japanese candy "hakuro", accounts for over 40% of Hi-Chew's business in America. As of now the company is importing its products from China, Korea and Hong Kong. Hi-Chew markets a variety of flavors for those looking to fill their oral cavity with something sweet. Some of their other popular flavors include: blueberry apple, strawberry, raspberry, white chocolate, honeycomb, orange, and peach.

It seems as though Hi-Chew has taken the American version of the "taichiro" and made it a bit sweeter by adding additional ingredients to it. For example, instead of being just a little candy with a Japanese name, it is actually a candy with a lot more flavor. Original Taichiro tasted like a really nice sweet, syrupy type of pudding. By bringing that type of flavor to the United States, however, the business has hit a home run.
