Hi-Chew Commences American Distribution

The Hi-Chew is a candy gum made in California by Snickers of California. Hi-Chew was created in 1981 and became popular in the United States. The gum was inspired by a Taffy, but not quite as sweet and not as acidic. Similar to a Starburst, but not quite as sweet and certainly not as salty, it comes in small paper packages and does not cling to the teeth (this is a trademark trait). In short, like all good candy, why the Hi-Chew inspires such devoted loyalty is hard to pinpoint.

In an attempt to capture some of the flavor of this rival candy, Hi-Chew released its own flavor of peanut butter cookie in a market that is pretty competitive and saturated with the market for low-calorie, sugar-free sweets. The result? A very sweet, very hot, very tasty candy. In an effort to keep up with the release of Hi-Chew, in January of this year, Snickers launched its own version of the chewy candy. The result was even sweeter!

First introduced in Japan in early 2021, Hi-Chew features a delicious blend of the sweet, salty, and the spicy. Initially, Hi-Chew was simply developed as a variation on the traditional Japanese "Kuromame" chocolate, which uses sugar from ripe Japanese red pears. Although the Japanese market eventually became saturated with the Americanized version, Hi-Chew retained its place as the most popular of Japanese sweets by selling aggressively in the U.S. market. It was the unexpected success of Hi-Chew that really helped its British competitor, Fage, take a bite out of the U.S. market share. In late summer of this year, Hi-Chew was introduced in Australia. Its increased availability in major cities in Australia and its new packaging style were the primary reasons for its successful overseas marketing.

At first, Hi-Chew only featured two basic flavors: one was the standard chocolate and the second was the black licorice flavor. As demand for Hi-Chew grew, additional flavors and varieties were added to the basic candy and today there are over twenty flavors to choose from. Some of these have become hugely popular overseas such as the "hot spicy" flavors, "cocoa butter" flavors, and "hamburgers & cheese" flavors. A newer addition to the menu is the "fruit gum" flavor, and Hi-Chew also offers the traditional red package with traditional packing. While Hi-Chew is not yet available in all Australian markets, it is expected to be making a significant move within a few years of being made available to all markets worldwide.

Hi-Chew's chief executive officer, Takuo Kubota, believes that Hi-Chew's key advantages over competitors is that Hi-Chew has access to a large variety of flavors, which is more efficient than local grocery store brands which do not have a wide range of flavors available to choose from. He also sees potential growth within the Asia-Pacific region due to the increasing demand for nut-free and organic snacks. Hi-Chew has also received inquiries from possible distributors in the United States, and in the future, Hi-Chew will explore options to sell its products nationally. With market competition in the U.S. growing, Hi-Chew feels it has an advantage because of the company's history and success.

Hi-Chew currently markets a variety of candy items including cookies, chocolates, hazelnuts, and candies in the U.S., Japan, and Australia. Other flavors and packaged treats are expected to be introduced in future years. Takuo hopes that Hi-Chew will develop a good distribution system by providing a consistent supply chain with the right partners to allow for a good price for its product. Hi-Chew hopes that the combination of successful business in Japan and overseas will allow it to create new market opportunities outside of Japan. Hi-Chew also plans to expand into other countries in the future.
