History of Hi-Chew, Incorporated

hichew

Sweet little drops of creamy grape juice burst into your mouth when you indulge in Grape Hi-Chew. Considered the official candy of Japan for over 30 years, Grape Hi-Chew has become an American favorite for more than 30 years! Consuming the sweet, crunchy fruit, this soft candy is packaged in classic tube shapes. Each tube contains two pounds of sweet gummy delight.

The main ingredient in this candy is Japanese, macerated artichoke, which is then cooked and reconstituted with high-glucose syrup. In America, this product is sold under several names including Hi-Chew, Honeycomb, Rolo, and Cherries-in-Route, just to name a few. Japanese producers to take special care in the processing of their fruit, so that the flavor does not lose its natural sweetness and flavor. Some of the most popular flavors in Grape Hi-Chew include Vanilla Mocha, Minty Caramel, and Fruit Flavored. Each of these offers a different type of flavor.

During one visit to a Hi-Chew candy store in California, I was impressed by the variety of flavors offered, including both exotic flavors and more everyday flavors. I particularly enjoyed the Grape flavor, which had hints of chocolate and raspberry. As I bit into the soft candy, it was instantly evident that this candy is not made from inexpensive fruits, but rather, premium confections made from Japanese Macerated Artichokes. Based on my experience, it can be considered a superior alternative to other sweets.

In an article by John Westerfield, he claimed that Hi-Chew was originally created as an afterthought in a research and development meeting for Macerated Artichokes, a candy that was being marketed in the UK. Because of the potential cost and difficulty in shipping the candy overseas, the company decided to create a candy that would taste much like the real thing, but be shipped in a smaller package. According to Westerfield, the idea for the Hi-Chew came when one of the executives tasted a piece of fruit and immediately exclaimed "Oh, it's got to be the Chewy Candy". With this discovery, the company moved forward with their creation and changed the name to Hi-Chew, which has stuck.

While some have claimed that Hi-Chew was developed only as a marketing invention, Westerfield states that they actually use the real thing in the production of their candies, as well. I was able to find a large selection of products from the American market, and while there were a few Japanese items that were available, the overwhelming majority of products were from the US. It is possible that Hi-Chew candy was initially intended for the Japanese market, but once they realized how successful it was in the US, it was marketed worldwide.

As you can see, Hi-Chew candy has managed to stay on top of the Sweet Tarts and Chewy candies industry. The product is not only tasty and nutritious, but it has also managed to remain relatively cheap due to its universal appeal. While Hi-Chew candy does not have the shelf life of many other candy toppings, the cost of bulk orders is extremely low compared to other brands. The company also offers free shipping and a satisfaction guarantee.
