History of Jelly Belly Filled Toys

Jelly Belly is a confectionery company whose origins can be traced back to 1819. Louis Filly was the first to trademark Jelly Belly jelly in the United States. Jelly Belly later became Jelly Roll and then Jelly Butt. The original intent of Jelly Belly was to create jelly and candy dishes for the servants of the wealthy in the early American colonies. They were very successful with this and then moved on to create candy that children enjoyed. Today Jelly Belly carries well over a hundred different candy varieties.

Jelly Belly

Jelly Belly was created in a warehouse by a man named Herman Goelitz. Herman Goelitz was actually a German-born Jew who emigrated to the United States. Jelly Belly candy was designed to resemble jellybeans that were grown in the West Indies (present-day Dominican Republic). In order to preserve the freshness of the jelly he created a process called "jars and jelly". This process required him to use large plastic containers to hold the Jelly Belly candy so it could undergo the long fermentation process which lengthened the shelf life of the candies.

The original Jelly Belly products were created for the general public and not geared towards children specifically. Since they were manufactured in large quantities, this meant that each candy could be sold in large quantities and still make a profit. This also meant that there were very few choices in styles or flavors within the candy itself.

Today Jelly Belly candy is geared more towards the younger crowd and offers many options in terms of flavor. There are many jelly belly shaped candy bars and jelly belly filled toys made especially for boys. Jelly Belly candy has also brought back some of their older candy bars such as the Tootsie Roll. There is even Jelly Belly jelly doughnuts available! These are the traditional candy that you would buy for a kid's birthday party.

Jelly Belly jellies have been used to promote many different things such as weight loss. As the popular jelly eaten by infants is rich in carbohydrates and calories, it has been used by dieticians to help people lose weight. And because it is considered a food, it has been allowed to be sold as candy during commercial breaks in the market!

One interesting fact about Jelly Belly jellies that is not known until now is that there are Jelly Belly candy bars for men that are being made and marketed in the United States. These candy bars are being marketed for their large sugary content that may appeal to the male population but which many women do not like. It would be interesting to see if the popularity of Jelly Belly candies among men would continue or wane as more men become aware of the foods benefits. It is a fact that Jelly Belly candies are making a comeback!
