History of Kit Kat

One bite of Kit Kat can transform your day! The world's largest candy maker has truly won the hearts of candy lovers everywhere. Popular for over 100 years, Kit Kat has enjoyed great success as a favorite candy with children, parents, and even some adults! For those who live in the United States Kit Kat is sold under license exclusively by the Hershey Company, while in other countries it is sold under various different names including Kit Kat, Candy Bar, or just Kit. As a result there are several different types of Kit Kat to be found for sale on the market.

Kit Kat

Kit Kat, or simply Kit Kat as it is popularly known, is actually a chocolate bar consisting of several small bars of chocolate with toppings between each bar. Although Kit Kat has changed over the years it still consists of the original formula with ketchup, mustard, raisins, nuts and cream baked in. Kit Kat candy was first manufactured commercially in the United States by Rowntree's chocolate factory, a division of the Hershey Company, in a warehouse that used to house the H.M.R. candy firm.

The United States version of Kit Kat bars are manufactured at the Hershey factory where the original recipe for the chocolate mixture is made, however, American re-worked kat bars are made at another facility, using recipes that have been revised. In most cases the American re-worked version of Kit Kat contains an added amount of chocolate powder to make it richer. Over time the American Kit Kat has become nearly identical to the original recipe, but many candy consumers prefer the original flavor of Kit Kat to the Americanized one. It is believed that the U.S. chocolate variation of Kit Kat was inspired by the Swedish candy when a Swedenese official was asked what he thought the most important country in Europe.

Sweets, including Kit Kat chocolate, are considered a luxury item in many parts of the world, particularly in countries where obesity is a major problem. In most of these countries Kit Kat is a favorite luxury item that is not readily available to children or to any economically or socially disadvantaged group. It is rare to see any Kit Kat bars in markets where children are sold the traditional chocolate bars. Efforts to create a more Americanized version of Kit Kat chocolate have failed completely. Efforts to re-market the product have instead focused on marketing the candy as a weight loss aid. Kit Kat has become a symbol of this attitude among many Americans.

Kit Kat has evolved from being simply a confectionary to having a social relevance as well. The re-worked kat bars now feature pictures of famous American icons, including John Kennedy, Elvis Presley and John Lennon. There are even Kit Kat bars featuring the portraits of pop stars, such as Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Madonna and plenty of others. Some even feature the face of America's most popular television program, The Simpsons. The aim of these efforts is to create a broader appeal to the chocolate candy than the simple "healthy eating chocolate" message.

The company is aware that these efforts are simply part of a marketing campaign and say they do not want to see the image of America as overly commercial. In addition, the company acknowledges that Kit Kat bars are different than other candy bars in that they are made with whole eggs. Many people are unfamiliar with this fact. The change in process has also led to a higher quality kat that has a more pleasant taste. Nevertheless, the company maintains that their success story will continue because they have stuck with a recipe with a quality product that is capable of standing on its own as a healthy eating chocolate bar.
