How Does Gum Disease Affect Sensitive Teeth?
Gum disease (also called periodontitis) is an inflammation of your gums. It is typically caused by bad oral hygiene practices which leave plaque, a sticky white film of bacteria, on your teeth and surrounding areas. In more advanced stages, periodontitis can result in severe, hurting gums; bleeding gums; and tooth loss. Getting to the root of your gum problems will help prevent serious gum disease, and can stop the progression of it. Let's look at how to make it easier on yourself.

Gum disease, or periodontitis, affects everyone's mouth, but does tend to affect those with a family history of it. Gum inflammation can also be caused by injury, or surgery involving the jaw. Poor oral hygiene practices can also contribute. Gum tissue and bone are very fragile; any movement or friction can weaken these tissues and cause periodontitis. You may have good dental hygiene practices, but if you are still experiencing issues with your gums, see your dentist.
Periodontitis is divided into two forms: mild and severe. Mild gingivitis is generally not too harmful and rarely has consequences beyond bleeding and redness. Severe gingivitis, which is also referred to as periodontitis, can affect the gums and bone around the tooth. This is extremely serious and typically results in periodontitis or even gingivitis and tooth loss over a long period of time.
If you are experiencing problems with your gums, your dentist may perform an oral examination to check for signs of inflammation. Gum inflammation can show up in a number of ways. Small pockets of plaque are visible beneath the gum line and on the surface of the tooth itself. These pockets are known as tartar. The bacteria that cause periodontitis then breaks down the tartar and allows it to irritate the gums. As the bacteria travel throughout the mouth, it picks up additional pockets of plaque, building up plaque in those areas until it reaches the gum tissue and pockets, where it becomes a problem.
As the bacteria travel through the mouth, it picks up other types of waste products that it identifies as food, such as garlic and onions. The bacteria release sulfur compounds that irritate the gums, making it become inflamed. As the bacteria travel through the mouth and reaches the root of the teeth, the process continues until the plaque is reduced to a sticky film on the tooth. This sticky film makes it difficult for saliva to reach the pockets of trapped bacteria, allowing the bacteria to flourish.
In extreme cases, the gum tissue can break down completely, causing the loss of teeth. Gum disease is more common with people who have chronic or sensitive teeth. People with this type of dental issue are more likely to be in danger of developing periodontitis. Gum disease also increases the likelihood of cavities, which increase the chance of tooth loss. People who have sensitive teeth may experience significant pain when brushing and flossing, and they may need to avoid eating hard foods such as candies and crunchy items. People with receding gums are also at increased risk of gum disease.
