How To Avoid Giving Your Baby Gum As A Gift

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, occurs when plaque forms on the teeth, hardens, and is unable to be removed by brushing and flossing. The plaque that builds up between the teeth is referred to as tartar. If not removed, plaque will irritate the gums, become thick, red, and fall out; it can also abscess the tooth.
Chewing gum is an easy, soft, solid material designed primarily to be chewed and then swallowed without being fully swallowed. Modern gum is made from sugar, gum resin, gels, sugar-free gums, and typically, a polyol coating. Polyols are derivatives of starch and are commonly known as "carbons." A number of polls have been shown to have antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria. Some examples of polyols are lycopene, vanillin, flavones, hesperetin, and quercetin.
While eating and chewing gum may provide many health benefits, it is important to consider potential side effects. Some of the more common side effects are tooth sensitivity and increased sensitivity to heat and cold. In addition, polymers of certain chemicals have been shown to cause cancer. However, studies have not proven these links.
Because of the potential for serious side effects, most medical professionals advise that the use of any chewing gum be discontinued if you have problems with: bleeding, swelling, allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, heart disease, or stroke. Be aware that if your blood pressure or heart rate goes up during or after eating chicle or sugary foods, it might be a good idea to leave the room. Conversely, eating a small amount of gums daily will not cause problems if you have high blood pressure or heart disease. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, refrain from chewing gum or chew only after your baby is completely settled.
Children sometimes become addicted to chewing gum, especially if they are left without their parents when they are chewing. However, this should only be a temporary addiction. When your child is done chewing, give them a piece of fruit or a piece of candy. This will let them know that you aren't opposed to their habit but just wanted them to taste something different.
Finally, don't be afraid to speak up if you have had bad experiences with any of the chewing gum mentioned above. You might find it interesting that other people have had bad experiences and have discovered great alternative gums to give them the same flavor. Talking to others who have tried bubble gum or gums in general will allow you to learn from their mistakes. This will help you avoid the mistakes they made and hopefully, will help you find an effective alternative to sugary gum.
