How to Enjoy the Flavor of Airheads
Airheads is a candy-sweet, fudge-filled, chewy, stick-on gum made by Dutch Italians Mario Pincio in Erlanger, Kentucky. Originally a candy of the Italian New Year, the gum was adopted into the United States in the late 1890s by a candy manufacturer from Chicago, Illinois called Richard C. Laramy. According to legend, he would send Airheads Bites back to Italy when he received them from his customers. This gum remains popular in parts of the northeast and Midwest.
A gumbo-flavored caramel gourd, it gained worldwide popularity as a high-end candy. It is made of real caramel, salt and sugar. The thick consistency of the candy gives it the feel of a thick pudding or cake. It contains real butter and not the artificial sweetener that many other sweets contain. Because of its thickness, it is ideal for eating on its own or as a delicious topping to cookies and other desserts.
As with most gums, Airheads has two types. One is the regular gum with the traditional flavor. The second type has been dubbed "sour gums" and is generally less expensive. For the best results, wrap each stick individually in wax paper before placing it into a zip-close bag or airtight container. Store airheads in a cool, dry place like a cupboard or pantry.
Airheads come in different varieties. When selecting gum, choose the type that matches your flavors of coffee, tea or wine. If you have certain drinks in mind, also look for gum that matches. Some gum is also available in a variety of flavors, like vanilla or chocolate. This would be an excellent addition to any candy buffet!
As with any gum, it is important to not overuse it. Airheads can become addictive, so be sure not to go over the serving size. Also, airheads are best consumed straight away after opening.
