How to Make a Flaky Pie Dough - A Quick and Easy Guide
There are several different recipes for making puff pastry. However, this dish is particularly popular in Australia and New Zealand. It is also known as "bake and you're baked" because of the special equipment necessary to make it. If you're new to cooking this pastry, I've provided this short instructional how to make puff pastry. The ingredients listed below will get you started on this delectable recipe.
Start by preparing the pastry dough. Sift all of the flour from the dry ingredients into a bowl and add in half a cup of cold milk. Mix until completely blended and then fold in the rest of the dry ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for about an hour. Once your pastry dough is ready, it's time to make the buttery pastry dough.
In a large bowl or large pot, mix together the flour, food processor, and ice water. Once mixed, add in half a cup of water. Scrape the mixture into the clean bowl and use a food processor or blender to puree it until it reaches the desired consistency. Turn the machine off and allow the mixture to cool down. Then it's time to form the baked goods. Carefully scoop out and place the flattened dough in the freezer for about thirty minutes so that it becomes firm enough to form pastries.
After the pastry is completely frozen, begin the process of formulating the dough. Using a teaspoon, turn the mixture into a ball and roll it into a long, thin tube. Cut the tube into twelve equal pieces and then cut each piece into three pieces. Using a food processor or a sharp knife, cut the first piece of the pastry into one-inch pieces. Peel back the outer skin on both pieces of the pastry and then cut the second piece into two-inch pieces.
Now it's time to start making the puffy, smooth texture pastry. Using a food processor or a blender, beat the butter and sugar until they are light and fluffy. Then add in the flour and mix thoroughly until it's all blended. Add the milk and beat until it's fully combined. Let this mixture cool for about ten minutes so that the eggs can be added in one at a time.
Form the pastry into a round shape, crimping the tips to make it easier to cut into shapes. Line up the baking pan with the three large pieces of pastry. Place the cooled mixture into the pre-heated oven and cook for approximately 10 minutes or until the pastry becomes dark brown and crisp. Once done, remove from the oven and let cool completely on a wire rack. You can now remove the stuffing from the bottom of the pie crust by using a fork.
