Is Sugar Free Candy Healthy?
It seems like just about every other store these days is offering sugar-free candy. Why? In an effort to help people lose weight, companies have developed a sugar free candy that tastes just as good as the regular kind. However, one thing that they don't tell you is that many of them are not really sugar free...
When you go into a candy store today you will find two types of sugar free candy: one is called "low-sugar" and the other is "low-sugar". The difference is that low-sugar doesn't contain any sugar at all. In fact it's very difficult to tell the difference at first. These two types of candy are often sold together, but if you look at the back of the container you will probably be able to see a difference in the product - the one for sugar has less sugar than the one for non-sugar.
What are the health benefits of sugar free candy? Many people aren't aware of the fact that sugar is one of the main causes behind diabetes. High blood sugar leads to complications such as heart disease and kidney failure. Those who suffer from diabetes shouldn't give up their diet - simply eat sugar free candy and your risk of developing complications is greatly reduced. This isn't just my opinion though - recent studies have shown that those who regularly eat sugar free candy actually live longer than those who do not.
But you still have to be careful when choosing sugar free candy. First of all, as with anything else on the market, there are bad ones and good ones. You want to make sure that what you're getting is pure sugar, not a variety of sugar alternatives. Many manufacturers use byproducts as sugar substitutes, and unfortunately these aren't as good for you as real sugar. It's important that you read the labels carefully. Look for the words "partially hydrogenated" or "imitation sugar".
Another thing to keep in mind is that sugar free candy doesn't always taste as good as the real deal. Depending on the manufacturing process used, some varieties of sugar free candy may have an artificial taste. If you're looking for a particularly nice flavor, you may need to look for varieties that use natural sugar. Just be aware that this can take a little bit more effort to find.
Sugar free candy can be a great way to keep your sugar intake down. It's impossible to get addicted to sugar, so you can't become diabetic while consuming lots of sugar-free candy. However, don't overdo it. Use sugar free candy sparingly, if at all, and only when it really seems appropriate.
