Licorice - An Ancient And Popular Herb
Licorice has been used since Roman times to treat a variety of ailments, including diabetes and intestinal disorders. However, in recent years it has gained popularity for its known weight loss properties. It is considered to be both effective and safe for use as a slimming aid, although some caution is recommended when using licorice to treat overweight conditions, as it may cause an elevated blood sugar level, which could result in serious side effects such as hypoglycaemia. There are several alternative treatments available to help you lose weight, including diet and exercise, but licorice remains the most popular.
Licorice, also known as glycyrrhizin or glycyrrhizin, is the generic name for Glycyrrhiza salicylate, a tubular plant of the mint family, in the sugar cane family, from the root of which an aromatic, sweet-smelling flavouring is extracted. Licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which is beneficial for individuals suffering from diabetes because it stabilizes blood glucose levels. Glycyrrhizin may also prevent or reduce allergic reactions to foods and to certain medications. Licorice can be used to treat skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, contact dermatitis, rosacea, acne and other similar skin problems, as well as to help relieve gastrointestinal discomfort, promote bowel motion and ease diarrhea.
Licorice root can be mashed up and made into a beverage or soap, which can then be used to treat skin irritations and as a diuretic. Licorice root is also common in the manufacture of candies such as licorice candy and licorice-flavored drinks. Licorice root can be found in many grocery and drug stores. The common name for licorice candy is licorice gum. Licorice candy is a commercially available form of licorice and not related to the glycyrrhizin within the flower of the root.
Consuming licorice can also be useful for treating or preventing common conditions, including: acid reflux, heartburn, colic, diarrhea, fatigue, headaches, flu and respiratory infections, difficulty sleeping, pain, sore throats, sinusitis, stomach ulcers and throat inflammation. Some suggest that licorice root extract may help to treat some forms of cancer. The glycyrrhizin contained in licorice appears to inhibit the formation of certain cancer cells and may inhibit tumor growth. However, more research is needed to determine whether licorice extract will have positive effects on such cancers as colon, bladder, leukemia and melanoma.
Licorice root is commonly used in candy bars and confectionery, often in combination with other sweeteners, as a sweetening agent. Licorice has a characteristic nutty, licorice flavor, which is often described as coming from the "candy gum" quality of its taste. The majority of licorice candy has a light, almost cotton like flavor. Licorice confectionery treats come in many different varieties, such as licorice chips, shakes, drinks, candy bars, chewing gums and spreads. Some people favor licorice over sugar for their candy treats, which make it an ideal alternative for children, as it is healthier than sugar.
Licorice has a variety of applications and is a popular additive to sweetener and flavoring. It is used in candy bars, smoothies, ice creams, sherbets and confectionery. Licorice has a number of well known and unknown uses and is especially popular in Asia where it is both traditional medicine and a popular snack. Licorice extracts can be found in some health food stores, and some supermarkets sell licorice root.
