Licorice - Can Licorice Root Help With Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
Licorice has been used for thousands of years to treat a range of conditions. In Chinese, it is called either "gourd flower" or "licorice flower." Licorice has been used to treat nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, sore throats, athlete's foot and toothache. Licorice root can even be chewed on its own.
In England and Europe, licorice root extract has been extensively used for the treatment of digestive disorders like indigestion and heartburn. However, recent studies in China have shown that licorice root extract can also be effective for treating some other common problems: headache, migraine, toothache, anxiety, depression, fatigue, constipation, skin problems like acne and eczema, gas pain, and many more. It did result in significant improvements in symptoms of many diseases. These include the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome.
The licorice extract's anti-inflammatory effect was established in a clinical trial. In the two-week study, patients who took licorice extract had significantly less mean decrease in the scores for the disease-rating questionnaire (DMS). The results were published in the July 2021 edition of Annals of Internal Medicine. In addition, patients taking the supplement also had significant improvement in their scores for the fatigue scale of the questionnaire. Both the DMS-rating and fatigue scales were measured at baseline and at the end of the two-week study.
59 This study found that licorice root extract may effectively treat GERD or acid reflux in adults. The gerd is a condition where stomach acid rises up into the esophagus.
60 Licorice extracts from the glycyrrhizin tree has long been used in China and in Europe as a digestive aid for alleviating the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and other gastrointestinal disorders. However, it was not known to have a direct effect on acid reflux in human tests. Now, after conducting two test-tube and human studies, this medicinal herb appears to have a role to play in the treatment of heartburn and other digestive ailments. The test-tube research shows that the extract from glycyrrhizin activates acid-producing enzymes.
Licorice root may also ease upper respiratory infections, particularly those that occur during the winter months. According to the Center for Drug Evaluation (CDE), the glycyrrhizin compound contained in licorice may improve cough quality and frequency by reducing inflammation of the lungs. Licorice may also reduce the risk of upper respiratory infections, especially among children and adolescents. For adults and children over the age of 20, the compound appears to provide relief from cough and cold symptoms associated with chronic rhinitis. One study also found that licorice root may ease the complications of bronchitis, which can cause serious daytime sleepiness during the winter months.
Licorice may also help prevent cavities, which are associated with tooth decay and gum disease. Two studies indicate that licorice root may reduce the risk of cavities by approximately 50 percent. One study indicated that chewing the herb resulted in significantly reduced saliva levels and increased saliva production. The second study showed that chewing licorice root resulted in significantly reduced nighttime salivary flow and increased total mouth rinse volume. The combination of increased saliva production and reduced saliva drainage may explain why drinking licorice tea or tinctures may help reduce the incidence of tooth decay. Further studies are needed to support these claims.
In addition to its potential anti-cavity effect, several human clinical trials have looked at the effect of licorice root on cholesterol levels. The extract from the root appears to be significantly effective in reducing cholesterol levels in test-tube and animal studies. While more research is needed to verify these results, one commercial vendor reported that his laboratory tested four different herbal extracts and licorice root was the most effective.
Licorice extract has a variety of other possible health benefits. Animal research indicates that the extract has anti-inflammatory activity and may help treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The herb has also been shown to be an effective appetite suppressant and to promote normal blood sugar levels. A two-week study in Chinese patients with IBD reported that the treatment significantly reduced diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Further studies are needed to verify these results and to determine if Licorice extract truly has a positive effect on IBD.
