Licorice - Can Licorice Root Products Help Treat Respiratory Conditions?
Licorice has been one of mankind's favorite sweet treats since time immemorial. It may have first been cultivated in ancient China and used as a tea, possibly with a combination of spices to enhance its flavor. In India it is called jowar and in France it is called especial.
Licorice or glycyrrhizae glabra is the botanical name of Glycyrrhiza glabrata, a palm-like flowering plant of the berry family, the mint family, in the seed of which a powerful sweet, fruity flavor is extracted. The Latin name for this plant is Glycerrhiza, a derivation of the Greek word glycos (glucose) meaning sweet. From a description by the Egyptian papyrus, licorice was listed as an ingredient in the earliest Coptic medications. The name comes from the sweet, pleasant odor of the flowers and leaves, as well as the tendency of licorice roots to cause urinary problems in some individuals. These conditions are called licorice poisoning.
Licorice is an alkaloid, which means that it contains two hydrogen atoms (atoms with a single proton) and one carbon atom (an alkali). This aromatic liquid is obtained by pressing the fresh leaves and stems, often picking them while the stems are still green and the juice oozes out freely. Licorice root, which contains about 95% of the total alkaloids in the plant, is extracted by steaming the leaves and stems under cold temperature. Then, they are strained and the resulting liquor is then used in treating skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, rashes, wounds, burns, oral infections and other disorders of the skin. Licorice oil is a popular ingredient in many topical gels and is often used to treat and prevent fungal infections of the skin (e.g., candida albicans).
Glycyrrhizin (the chemical name for glycyrrhizin) is the major component of Licorice Root and is responsible for its numerous health benefits. Among these health benefits is the fact that Glycyrrhizin has been found to be useful for treating various types of skin conditions including acne, eczema, warts, herpes, boils, ulcers, skin diseases, and various forms of cancer. Glycyrrhizin has also been found useful in treating some forms of depression, and it is also believed that it helps to increase a person's libido. For many years, licorice root and glycyrrhizin have been used to promote general well being by relieving aches and pains, reducing anxiety, improving circulation, and boosting the immune system.
In the June 2021 issue of JAMA, an article was published which reported that a two-week research project had concluded that licorice root extract was useful for treating and possibly preventing the common condition known as acid reflux. The research was conducted by a team of doctors from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Department of Defense Medicine. The article contained data on forty-one different patients who took part in a standard treatment of licorice root extract.
Of the forty-one patients, twenty-one experienced mild dyspnea, and twenty-one were diagnosed with moderate or severe respiratory conditions such as asthma. Of the twenty-one patients, fourteen were considered to be at high risk for developing acid reflux, and therefore they were required to undergo additional testing. Of the fourteen acid reflux patients who completed the study, five showed significant improvement when taking licorice root products, while the remaining four remained symptomatic. Because the symptoms of acid reflux can be so uncomfortable and irritating, licorice root extracts may be an excellent choice for those who suffer from this painful and discomforting condition.
