Licorice and Its Effects
Licorice, the sweet gums of the winter months, has been cultivated since Roman times when it was used to sweeten food and drinks. In fact, the word licorice comes from Latin, "licus," sweet, and - "a sweet." Licorice root is the botanical name for Glycyrrhiza gabonensis, a perennial flowering plant of the tree family, Fabaceae, in the family of Pterocarpus, belonging to the mint family. It is an easy-growing, low maintenance plant that prefers full sun to light shade in tropical and subtropical climates.
Licorice may be taken as a tea, in the form of extracts or in its powdery, fine root form, often sold under the name Licorice Root. Licorice may cause side effects if taken in high doses on a regular basis, especially in pregnant women. Some of these include dizziness, upset stomach, weakness, nausea, vomiting, and swelling of the cheeks and tongue. Long-term licorice use may cause intestinal obstruction, liver damage, kidney damage and even death. If these effects are noticed, taking licorice may be stopped and medical treatment commenced.
Licorice may also cause abnormal heart rhythms and chest pain, sometimes without apparent reason. Licorice may cause abnormal heart rhythms because it increases the heart rate, causes large shifts in blood pressure (tachycardia) and increases the body's need for oxygen. In addition, it may cause abnormal heart rhythms because it causes large shifts in blood pressure (tachycardia). People who have high blood pressure or high cholesterol should be very cautious about using black licorice. Licorice has been shown to cause some degree of diuretic action, raising urine production and enhancing excretory function. This effect is probably caused by the potassium levels in the licorice. High potassium levels have been associated with the development of various types of kidney disease, including glomerulosclerosis, nephrotuberculosis, and heart disease.
Licorice itself does not appear to have any negative effects on the cardiovascular system. However, many licorice products contain the dried peel from a bark, known as "anaise". The chemical reaction that occurs when this ingredient interacts with sugar causes a chemical modification of glycosides, which inhibits the action of insulin in the body. Insulin is important in maintaining normal glucose functions in the body. Many scientists believe that licorice extract does nothing to help control diabetes, but may have an effect on people who are sensitive to insulin. Anecdotal evidence indicates that drinking a little bit of anise oil extract before meals can reduce the amount of time it takes for people to feel hungry, so it may have some positive effect on keeping a person from developing diabetes.
Although the scientific evidence indicates that there are no negative effects of licorice, there are many brands of licorice products on the market that contain glycyrrhizin. These products must be avoided if you have an ongoing problem with high blood pressure or diabetes. An excessive amount of glycyrrhizin may cause serious damage to the liver. One study showed that people who regularly consumed large amounts of glycyrrhizin-rich licorice products had a significantly higher incidence of liver disease than those who did not consume these products.
