Licorice And Its Effects On The Diabetes Level Of The Body

Licorice comes from a plant with a long rhizome (stem) and a tubular white root. It grows in tropical and subtropical climates around the world. Licorice has been used as a sweetener and medicinal tonic in many countries, where it is often prescribed by naturopathic physicians. In the United States, licorice is often sold as candy in grocery stores, and its consumption may be traced back to the early American settlers who imported it from China.

Licorice has a long history of being sweet rather than bitter. One theory on licorice and sweetness is that it has a chemical effect on our taste buds that makes sweetness less unpleasant. This is why people sometimes eat licorice with their favorite sweet treats, such as chocolates. There are other studies to suggest that licorice does have some effect on the brain, though this remains to be seen. Licorice also appears to have some health benefits; it appears to have an effect on blood pressure, cholesterol levels and weight, and to have some antiseptic properties.

The glycyrrhizin in licorice has a glycyrrhizic acid (GA) that contributes to the sweetness. Glycyrrhizin is found in various fruits, including apple, cherry, pomegranate, plum and tangerines. The sweetness comes from the fermentation of sugars (carboya), which are later broken down to sugars (glycyrrhizin). Some research suggests that eating large amounts of licorice (over half a pound per day) may help to reduce risk of diabetes because of its glucose-reducing effect. One study comparing licorice to a control group of healthy non-dieters found that participants had similar blood sugar and obesity measures.

Other studies suggest that the glycyrrhizin found in licorice may help the body fight off certain types of cancer, possibly by inhibiting tumor growth or possibly preventing cancer cells from forming in the body. The glycyrrhizin, like glycyrrhizic acid, may also have some positive effect on the cardiovascular system, lowering blood pressure. Licorice has also been shown to be useful for treating or curing allergies in people who are sensitive to caffeine or other ingredients found in teas or coffee. For people with diabetes, licorice may help regulate blood sugar levels.

Because the glycyrrhizin found in licorice seems to have some positive effect on the cardiovascular system, drinking licorice may be helpful in treating or preventing heart disease. One study comparing people who ate a diet high in glycyrrhizin from licorice root extracts with those who did not note a significant reduction in blood pressure. Another study by British researchers who tested licorice against a number of different types of diabetes noted that the licorice significantly reduced the amount of insulin the participants needed to keep their blood sugar levels under control.

Licorice may also be effective in treating diabetes. This is due to the many substances and antioxidants found in licorice root. These substances may help regulate blood sugar and may inhibit the release of insulin. Some researchers believe that licorice may work to reduce the risk of type II diabetes, especially when the licorice is taken with an oral glucose-lowering medication. Licorice has also been used in Chinese medicine to treat diabetes, liver problems, high blood pressure, kidney stones, and high cholesterol.
