Licorice Extract And Topical Gels

Licorice is known to be one of the sweetest candy varieties available worldwide. Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza Glabra) is a perennial flowering plant of the sun-blasted plant family, the mint or citrus family, belonging to the mint family (Lamiaceae). In India, it is also known as "Bala," which according to some sources, goes back to 4000 years. Licorice has a variety of names depending upon the region where it is grown: in some regions it is called "Rang de Mango" (Sweets of Rang), "Kulfi" (Fruits of Kulfi) and "Lecithin." Licorice is used both as a sweetener and for medicinal purposes in many cultures around the world.

Licorice has a number of chemical derivatives, one of them being glycyrrhizin (also known as glycyrrhizic acid), which is responsible for its sweetness. Licorice and honey are commonly used in sweetener and health food products. Licorice and honey are often consumed in combination with other ingredients such as lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, honey, ginger and licorice root itself. Licorice has also been extensively marketed as a cure for various diseases including "gout," "rheumatism" and "cardiovascular disease."

In an interesting study from the Journal of American Medicine, led by Professor Shyam Sundaram of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Clinical Research, University of Buffalo, New York City, "licorice (Glycyrrhiza Glabra)... was shown to reduce the severity of chronic abdominal acid reflux, as well as to decrease the number of days affected by acid reflux." The report further stated, "glycyrrhizin was a powerful inhibitor of acid production in an outpatient setting." The subjects who took licorice had fewer acid reflux attacks than those who did not. In a second study, conducted by Professor Sundaram and his colleagues at the University of Nottingham, England, "children with chronic bronchitis who had failed to respond to standard treatment had a statistically significant effect of licorice use, with a mean reduction of scores of more than thirty-three percentage points." This represents the largest recorded reduction of symptoms in a report on a standard treatment for acid reflux.

Glycyrrhizin is found naturally in a number of foods, including: apples, grapes, cranberries, plums, strawberries, lemons, raisins, dates, sultanas, and many others. One type of licorice, glycyrrhizin (licorice root), occurs in the roots only. In laboratory tests, glycyrrhizin, when added to the pulp of ripe tomatoes, inhibited the production and release of volatile acid by sixty percent. It was found to be even more effective when it was combined with resveratrol. The combination has proven especially successful in treating skin conditions such as acne and eczema. Other potential applications include the reduction of inflammation and allergies, as well as the alleviation of other skin conditions, such as whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples.

Licorice and other plant compounds have also been used in the fields of anti-aging and skin care to improve the appearance of skin aging. Many of these substances possess anti-inflammatory and anti-wrinkle properties. For example, resveratrol is a highly potent antioxidant that has been shown to reduce the effects of aging on human cells. Some of the other ingredients in licorice and topical gels may reduce skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema. Some studies suggest that licorice extracts and glycyrrhizin may help to prevent certain types of cancer, although these claims remain unproved.

For moderate to severe redness and swelling caused by eczema, an anti-inflammatory liquid steroid cream using licorice extract and glycyrrhizin is usually prescribed. For more intense symptoms, another type of topical gels containing licorice extract and glycyrrhizin may be recommended by your doctor or dermatologist. A licensed practitioner should be consulted if you are pregnant, nursing, or planning a pregnancy. Always speak to your doctor before beginning any new prescription or supplement intake.
