Licorice Extract May Treat and Prevent

Licorice, pronounced "la stick-ee," is a vegetable native to China, where it is often used in Chinese cooking and in candy making. Licorice root (also known as glycyrrhizin) has been identified as one of the five fundamental root compounds found in nature, along with sugar, water, and salt. Licorice is cultivated in different parts of Asia and Africa, including India, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Licorice has a variety of uses, including treating toothaches, improving the appetite, reducing swelling and inflammation, as well as treating skin disorders such as psoriasis.

Licorice was first used commercially in the middle ages for treating various maladies, especially those that were caused by over-production of stomach acids. For example, in China, licorice root extract was often prescribed for those with gastro-intestinal complaints, as stomach acids were said to be responsible for toothaches, bloating, and bad breath. In Europe, licorice root extract was used to treat conditions such as asthma and heart disease. The standard treatment using licorice root extract involved the ingestion of an amount of the herb every day for a period of 2 weeks, in an attempt to normalize acid levels in the body.

A test-tube study conducted at the University of Rhode Island, led by Dr. Lawrence D. Miller, examined the effect of licorice extract on human colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease. The test-tube study found that licorice reduced the inflammation of the large colon (colon wall) but did not have an anti-inflammatory effect on the small intestine (colonic epithelium). These results suggest that further tests on the effect of licorice on colonic inflammation will require animals, such as rats, to be tested in this respect.

Other potential benefits of licorice appear to lie in alleviating symptoms of diabetes. In a small study at the University of Wisconsin, diabetic patients treated with licorice had a statistically significant improvement in their insulin tolerance. Further studies are needed to confirm these initial findings, but licorice may help delay the progression of diabetes. Licorice may also help prevent prostate and breast cancer, as well as treating skin diseases such as acne and eczema. Licorice is also being studied for its potential benefits in treating menopausal problems such as hot flashes and reducing cholesterol levels.

The potential benefits of licorice don't stop there, however. It has been shown to help treat conditions such as arthritis, asthma, and skin diseases such as psoriasis. It is also believed to help treat some forms of cancer, and to aid in the prevention of heart disease. Licorice may help treat conditions that are potentially life-threatening, and it appears to have positive effects on many physical conditions and health disorders.

It is impossible to determine how much licorice extract is needed to produce the desired effects. A two-week study performed at the University of Wisconsin clearly indicates that licorice extract may be helpful for those who wish to lose weight, lower cholesterol levels, and treat a range of other conditions. Further studies are necessary to verify these results. If the current studies are accurate, licensorice root extract may help treat and prevent diseases and disorders that affect millions of people. Licorice may even be able to help reverse some aspects of aging!
