Licorice May Eases Upper Respiratory Conditions

Licorice, also known as glare or glycyrrhizin, is the generic name for Glycyrrhiza glabrata, a perennial flowering plant of the potato family, Fabaceae, in the seed of which a distinctive sweet, fragrant flavor can be extracted. The Latin name is "licorica." Licorice grows wild in many areas of Central and South America, particularly in drier tropical areas. It is an edible fruit whose flavor varies with geographical location; in Peru it is called quest, in Brazil cardio and in the Andes, papayas (tobacco), andamanthus (palm tree).

Licorice root extract has been used historically to treat a variety of conditions, ranging from simple irritations of the skin and muscles to more serious conditions such as acid reflux and diverticulitis. It was used, perhaps most effectively in the treatment of beriberi or "bronchi," a chronic condition characterized by frequent, painful attacks of heartburn. The medical literature describes various treatments, but in general, licorice root extract was reported to be fairly effective. Anecdotal evidence supports the view that licorice may play a role in the pathophysiology of some forms of disease. For example, anecdotal evidence suggests that licorice can reduce the severity and frequency of diarrhea, colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.

Licorice, in addition to its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, has been shown to possess antibiotic effects, reducing the incidence of gram-positive bacteria and Streptococcus viridans in laboratory mice. Preliminary evidence also suggests that licorice may ease the symptoms of asthma. Licorice may also alleviate symptoms related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as symptoms associated with allergies, asthma and rhinitis.

Other possible applications for licorice include the reduction of migraine headaches and fatigue associated with chronic stress. Licorice may help to relieve anxiety and depression in people with a tendency to be overly stressed. Licorice may also help to treat migraines. However, when licorice root extract is taken, it should not be taken for headaches due to dehydration. People with preexisting conditions should consult with their medical doctor before starting to take any herbal remedy for an anticipated upcoming medical crisis.

Licorice may also help to treat and prevent asthma. Preliminary evidence supports the view that licorice may ease the symptoms of asthma and post-nasal drip. For individuals with asthma, it may help to alter the diet and take an anti-inflammatory medication such as acetaminophen or NSAIDS to control the symptoms of airway inflammation. Long-term use of anti-inflammatory medications may lead to the suppression of immune function and thus may ease upper respiratory conditions.

Licorice may also be taken to improve heart rhythm, since it may normalize potassium levels in the body. High blood pressure is associated with low potassium levels in the body. Licorice may help to increase potassium levels in the body, which may result in lessening the effects of high blood pressure. Licorice extract has also been shown to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
