Licorice May Has Great Medicinal Benefits
Licorice has been used in Chinese traditional medicine for thousands of years. Its therapeutic properties have been well known since ancient times. It has been shown to improve blood circulation, alleviate diarrhea and stimulate gums. The traditional remedy of licorice also includes it as an effective treatment for colds, influenza and even as an anti-inflammatory agent! What's more, licorice has been shown to have the effect of increasing the production of serotonin, the substance that promotes a "high" feeling.
Licorice root extract's ability to treat various conditions makes it highly desirable for use by patients with high blood pressure, heart disease and gastritis, as well as individuals who are undergoing cancer treatment. In addition, licorice root extract has demonstrated to be effective in combating the effects of nicotine, with no reported side effects. Licorice extracts have also proven to be beneficial when taken on a regular basis in patients with diabetes and ulcerative colitis. A two-week study conducted by the University of Northumbria in the UK, comparing the effects of licorice with that of aspirin showed that licorice extract was more effective at lowering blood sugar levels than the latter compound.
Licorice has also been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of arthritis, with both animal and human studies supporting this view. In a test-tube study published by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Disease (NIAMS), mice treated with osteoarthritis showed marked improvement when given a regular dose of licorice root extract. In a later clinical trial, female subjects who were taking a regular low dose of steroid osteoarthritis medication were found to experience marked improvements when the supplement was combined with a course of anti-inflammatory drugs. Licorice extract was shown to be even more effective when combined with ibuprofen or naproxen. Additional trials are currently underway, and if these results are replicated in humans, it will provide strong backing for the use of licorice root extract in the treatment of osteoarthritis.
For those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, licorice extract may help treat the symptoms of the disease. Clinical studies have shown that licorice does reduce joint pain and stiffness, as well as improving overall joint mobility. One study involving sixty-two subjects who had arthritis as well as Lupus showed that subjects who took licorice were less likely to experience adverse effects from their treatment. Another study involving people who had rheumatoid arthritis and cystic fibrosis showed that licorice extract was safe and well tolerated by the test subjects, with improvements noted during follow up. While more studies are needed to confirm these findings, it is clear that licorice can be an effective treatment for some patients of this painful and limiting condition.
Other potential benefits of licorice could lie in its anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies have shown that licorice may help relieve symptoms of inflammatory conditions such as Lupus, as well as reducing inflammation in other areas, such as in the brain, lungs, and kidneys. Additionally, licorice has been shown to have a protective effect on the heart and blood vessels. Whether these findings hold true for all individuals with inflammatory diseases and whether they prove useful in treating these conditions is yet to be seen.
The potential benefits of licorice are not the only reason to give this popular herb a try. Licorice is a sweet, bitter, and aromatic substance, which makes it very easy to incorporate into any number of recipes. For example, licorice root extract can be used to sweeten stews, to give the tea a licorice flavor, or even to give ice cream a licorice flavor. Its use in these and other recipes shows that licorice does have many uses beyond being a food additive. Licorice may help treat a number of conditions, but testing in test-tube culture media is still needed.
