Licorice May Help Treat A Few Different Types Of Skin Conditions

Licorice (glycyrrhiza) is the botanical name for Glycyrrhiza Glabra, a tropical flowering plant of the mint family, Lamiaceae, in the sugar family (Ilea-Carnival). The species name, Glycyrrhiza, is taken from the Greek word glycyra, meaning sweet. Licorice grows wild in India, where it is a popular crop. It has been used by many cultures as a food and for medicinal purposes. Licorice root extracts are widely used for enhancing athletic performance, curing fungal skin diseases, treating periodontal disease, improving appetite and weight loss, treating sore throats and coughs, and as a diuretic.

Licorice, candies or licorice root extracts, has a long history of use as a sweetener and as an antidepressant; it is currently being investigated for its potential use as a treatment of periodontitis and fungal infections of the oral cavity, nose, and throat. Licorice may also have antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-viral properties. It has an extremely sweet taste that some people find unappealing. Licorice does not ferment, starch or turn yellow when stored at room temperature. However, licorice may degrade over time, especially if stored in warm conditions.

Licorice root has a wide variety of topical gels and washes that contain glycyrrhizin (green tea) and other organic compounds that are believed to have a positive effect on treating various skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, acne scars, blemishes, acne lesions, eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis. Licorice root has also been studied using in depth studies that show its ability to reverse or prevent the development of pre-malignant skin cancers. Licorice has also been used in Europe for years for treating various urinary tract problems. Its effects on urinary tract function were proven to be beneficial in patients with endometriosis, bladder cancer, and recurrent urinary tract infections.

Licorice root products can help treat periodontal disease. Licorice is a powerful antioxidant that scavenges free radicals, which are molecules that damage healthy cells. Free radicals are created in the body by excess oxygen, tobacco smoke, alcohol and certain chemicals such as air pollution. Licorice has been shown to protect against the formation of free radicals through its ability to generate anti-oxidants. Licorice root products that contain glycyrrhizin can effectively prevent the progression of periodontal disease by inhibiting destructive effects of free radicals.

Licorice and diabetes: In one study, male mice who ate a diet low in potassium had high blood pressure. Mice who ate a diet that was high in licorice showed lower high blood pressure. These results show that licorice products may be useful in treating diabetes.

Licorice and skin conditions: One of the most common conditions treated with licorice root extract is eczema. It has been known for ages that licorice and its oil can soothe irritated skin and ease the symptoms of several skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, xerosis, stasis dermatitis, and dry skin. A 2-week study found that licorice extract reduced the symptoms of adult seborrheic dermatitis (a common condition among older adults) when it was applied to the skin twice daily.
