Licorice May Protect Against Hip Disease
Licorice root is the botanical name for Glycyrrhizaglabra, a perennial flowering plant of the mint family, Fabaceae, in the spice family, Botanical names are given to a medicinal plant by its geographical location and the generic term of the plant is chosen to reflect its botanical name. Licorice comes from a Greek word which means sweet. Sweet as it may be but licorice has a lot more to offer to the consumer than just sweetness. Licorice has been used as an anti-inflammatory agent, analgesic, anti-seizure, anti-fungal, and as a diuretic. For these and other reasons licorice has become a popular sweetener among the masses. Licorice has recently come on the scene in the form of an energy drink, but before you run out to your nearest candy store try this simple remedy first.
Licorice is a delicate plant. While the majority of licorice contains glycyrrhizin (a sugar compound), some licorice only contains trace amounts of glycyrrhizin. Licorice with high concentrations of glycyrrhizin is said to taste like licorice wine. Licorice root itself does not have any unique taste. Licorice with a low concentration of glycyrrhizin does not have the same pleasant flavor and some licorice root can be ingested without any unpleasant aftertaste.
Licorice can be consumed in two different ways; one is to chew the dried root and the other is to make a tea. Licorice root should not be taken in excess and the amount should be lesser than three grams per day. Licorice should not be mixed with sugar or any other sweetening agent as it will make the licorice bitter. Licorice should not be consumed during the first trimester of pregnancy or if you have diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure or any form of heart problem. Licorice also contains a large amount of carbohydrates and can cause erratic mood swings in little children.
Licorice and its extracts have been used in China and India for hundreds of years. Licorice has been shown to reduce fever, relieve skin disorders and to improve lung function. Licorice has also been found to be an effective treatment for a range of skin conditions including eczema and acne. For this reason licorice tea is increasingly popular for use as a natural topical gel to treat skin conditions such as eczema and acne.
A clinical trial involving a total of sixty-two people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) found that the combined administration of licorice root extract may result in significant improvements in symptoms. The improvement was particularly notable in those patients who were using either triptan or acid suppressant medication. The study's senior author was impressed by the efficacy of licorice in treating GERD. He concluded, "Glycyrrhizinchin, a component of licorice, has the potential to provide symptomatic treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease."
Licorice may protect the health of our bones and teeth. It may prevent osteoporosis and significantly reduce the risk of breaking a hip. Licorice may also significantly reduce the symptoms associated with arthritis. It may also reduce the frequency and severity of migraine headaches. Most importantly it may help prevent the onset of gout.
