Licorice May Relieves Alternative Health Problems

Licorice has been used by people for medicinal purposes since ancient times. Today, it is used in sweets and candy, and as an ingredient of candies and jams. Licorice is derived from a root taken from a sugar cane tree. Licorice comes from a plant called Glycyrrhiza Glabra, a member of the mint family, in the sub-tropical region of the eastern continents of Asia, North Africa and South America. Licorice root is the generic name of Glycyrrhiza sativa, a flowering shrub of the cucumber family, from which a yellow sweet, bitter-tasting flavouring is extracted.

Licorice appeared in the English courtly songs of William Shakespeare and is mentioned in the works of Sir Walter Scott and Thomas Bulfinch. In the medical literature, licorice root extract has been shown to have many antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, astringent and antidepressant properties. It has also been shown to result in significant improvements in symptoms of acid reflux, heartburn, vomiting, diarrhea, stress, sore throats, asthma, bronchitis, nasal congestion, nervousness, anxiety and insomnia.

Licorice root may help to prevent cavities. Licorice inhibits formation of gallstones, reduces cholesterol levels and may even lower blood pressure. Licorice may help to protect against cavities by inhibiting glycation of tooth enamel. The sugar (glucose) that results when food (tartaric) enters the bloodstream is removed by gloving. Thus, foods (sweet) that are easily digested, such as grapes, may protect the teeth from damage by high-fat foods, which can promote cavities and tooth decay.

Licorice may help to relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and thus may ease upper respiratory tract infections. The anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of licorice root may relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Licorice has significant anti-viral, anti-septic and anti-inflammatory properties. Licorice may also ease the discomfort caused by a cold or other virus.

In experiments with mice, licorice root extracts have proved to be beneficial in reducing tumor growth. Further studies are underway in Germany and China to test the effects on human beings. Preliminary research shows that licorice extract may relieve muscle pain and help to increase joint flexibility. In test-tube studies, extracts from licorice root have proved effective in promoting the proliferation of hair cells.

It has also been proven in experiments with human volunteers that licorice root extract may help to reduce the symptoms of acid reflux in adults. In the test group, it reduced the number of episodes of heartburn, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), sore throats and hoarseness. In a control group, no significant differences were noted in the number of episodes of acid reflux or the severity of symptoms. The researchers believe that future investigations will prove that this herb aids in the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease, especially with its anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.
