Licorice May Treats Several Health Problems
Licorice has been called the "candy of the Gods" for ages. It is often used as a sweetener in baking, candy and other sweets. Its distinctive flavor, licorice's unique smell and its medicinal value have made licorice a popular spice for many centuries. The sweet, aromatic flavor is attributed to glycyrrhizin, a substance found in licorice that gives licorice its characteristic flavor. Licorice is an essential oil with a complex enzymatic breakdown to yield sugar.
Licorice may be taken as a drink, in its pure state, or in a candy or chewing gum preparation; however, its use as a medicine has been around for many years. Licorice root extracts are used by herbalists all over the world to treat acid reflux, nausea, colic, coughing, flu symptoms, sore throats and nervousness. Licorice is most often used in combination with ginger and lemon to treat respiratory complaints. Licorice root extract has been proven to be effective for treating coughs and sore throats, but its efficacy as a treatment for acid reflux is not well-documented. Licorice root extracts seem to be less effective for people who have difficulty swallowing pills.
Licorice has also been used to treat skin conditions such as acne and eczema. Licorice is a good skin moisturizer and it has an anti-inflammatory effect when applied topically. Topical gels containing licorice are available at health food stores and pharmacies. For skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, licorice may be rubbed directly on the affected areas for several minutes to bring relief from itching and burning sensations.
As an anti-viral agent licorice root can be used to treat cold sores, genital warts, shingles and herpes zoster. It may also be used to treat genital warts, genital herpes and hepatitis C. In pregnant women it may be helpful in reducing the size of sore and reducing pain during childbirth. The anti-viral activity of licorice root is not well-documented for oral or vaginal use.
In tests licorice was shown to reduce the acid reflux symptoms of GERD by reducing lower esophageal sphincter pressure. This was followed by a statistically significant reduction in the percentage of patients with heartburn or acid reflux problems, when compared to a placebo group. These results suggest that licorice root extract has potential for treating and preventing acid reflux disease. However, further studies are needed to confirm these findings. Licorice should be considered only as a complementary therapy along with a standard treatment for GERD.
Preliminary data also suggest that licorice root extract may help treat arthritis. Preliminary data from a clinical trial on mild to moderate osteoarthritis indicate that the extracts of glycyrrhizin (licorice) may reduce joint inflammation by reducing the production of prosteroylated free radicals. During a 2-week test period, participants took a daily supplement containing standardized licorice extracts, or a placebo. After the test period, total joint stiffness was assessed using a numerical rating system based on the degree of joint pain experienced.
