Licorice Root and Its Side Effects

Licorice comes in a variety of colors, including white, yellow, green, purple and even blue. Licorice has been a popular sweetener since ancient times. It has a long history of use as a medicinal treatment for many conditions and is often prescribed by physicians to relieve coughs and colds. Licorice roots can also be used to treat a variety of skin maladies, including painful gingivitis and eczema. Licorice can also be used to sweeten teas, and it has also been used to flavor ice cream since at least the 20th century. Licorice has a lovely smell, so it is commonly used to flavor candles and other aromatherapy products.

Licorice root can be made into tea and used to treat a number of medical conditions. Licorice root can be used to treat upset stomach, drowsiness and restlessness. It can also help to ease indigestion, colic and vomiting and it may help to ease some of the symptoms of influenza and the common cold. Licorice root tea is most useful when mixed with honey.

As with all foods, too much licorice root consumption can cause unpleasant side effects. Licorice can cause diarrhea in some individuals and this has serious implications for those people who have kidney problems or who have a poor immune system. If you are uncertain about the side effects that licorice root causes, you should consult with your physician. Licorice should not be given to an elderly person with diabetes or a person with liver disease because of the high sugar content of the licorice root. Licorice can also cause severe allergic reactions and can cause vomiting, swelling of the lips and tongue and even severe skin irritation around the area where it is consumed.

The effects of licorice and their side effects are exacerbated if you take diuretic drugs such as diuretics, because they will increase urine production. If this happens, it will increase the amount of sugars in your blood and can cause your body to work harder to rid itself of excess sugars. Excess sugar in your blood is one of the main causes of insulin resistance - another common side effect of licorice root consumption. To minimize the occurrence of these side effects, do not consume large amounts of licorice.

Licorice has been widely used in China for many years to treat diabetes, especially in the west where diuretics are not commonly used. However, the American Diabetes Association recommends against the use of licorice root in the treatment of diabetes - and it is not clear why. Licorice, in moderation, appears to be fairly safe. If you have a history of heart disease or any kind of heart problems, talk to your doctor about the possibility of licorice root causing a problem in your body. It is important that you let your doctor know about any past issues that may have been related to your heart.

Licorice has many healthy properties, but as a food is not one that you want to overindulge in. Licorice should only be taken in very small amounts, and you should avoid licorice root completely if you have a history of heart problems or high blood pressure. Licorice should be enjoyed, but it does not deserve to be treated with abandon! Stick to the good stuff (such as other plant compounds) to help your body stay healthy!
