Licorice Root As an Antimicrobial and Anesthetic Agent
Licorice comes from the glycyrrhizin class of plants. The glycyrrhizin class contains sugar cane, alfalfa and sugar beet plants, among others. Licorice derives from a root called Glycyrrhiza Glabra that is widely found in Southern Europe and Asia, especially in China. Licorice is most famous for its usage in candies such as licorice candy and licorice tea. The sweet roots are cultivated in Europe, America, and Africa. Licorice has been used since ancient times to treat a variety of medical conditions, including nausea and vomiting, cough, arthritis, toothache, and nervous exhaustion.
Some of the side effects of licorice may include stomachache, flatulence, irritability, tremors, leg cramps, jaundice, anxiety, vomiting, sexual dysfunction, liver disorders, heartburn, diarrhea, a serious skin rash, and dry mouth. Licorice may also cause fetal defects in pregnant women. Licorice may also cause hypoglycemia in diabetics. Licorice may interact with prescription and nonprescription drugs such as anticoagulants, anesthetic agents, antiplatelets, antihistamines, and aspirin. If you're taking medications, talk with your doctor before taking licorice.
Licorice may treat upper respiratory problems by strengthening the walls of the trachea. Licorice can be taken in the form of gums, lozenges, or liquids. Licorice may also be applied topically to cure external warts, burn injuries, acne, boils, diaper rash, oral sores, rashes, shingles, skin lesions, and vaginal yeast infections. Licorice has also been used traditionally as a cough suppressant and for treating flu symptoms.
Licorice should be enjoyed, but it should also be kept in mind that licorice root can be very poisonous when ingested. Licorice is sold in juice, candy bars, chewing gums, and in dried, compressed forms for ingestion. Licorice should never be consumed in its whole form. If you swallow the entire leaf, you might become seriously ill or even die. If you choose to chew licorice root, gargle beforehand to soften the bitter taste and avoid swallowing the entire candy bar.
Licorice root contains glycyrrhizin (glycyrrhizic acid), a natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agent. Licorice root inhibits prostaglandin production and stimulates mast cell release. Licorice contains two types of sugar, mannose and glycogen, which are metabolized into glucose by the liver. This gives licorice its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
Glycyrrhizin has been proven to treat ovarian cancer, osteoarthritis, periodontal disease, psoriasis, oral cancer, ulcers, rheumatoid arthritis, and herpes outbreaks. A European study found that licorice extracts from glycyrrhizin inhibited the growth of human T cells (the white blood cells that fight infection) in vitro. Licorice extracts from glycyrrhizin displayed significantly lower activity against HIV, hepatitis B virus, and cytomegalovirus. There was no significant effect on cells that multiply in the bone marrow or mononuclear phagosome.
