Licorice Root Extract - Health Benefits

Licorice - the sweet, strong liquorice - is cultivated and consumed throughout Europe and the United States, with the Dutch in particular being noted for their love of licorice. Licorice has been used both as a medicine and a sweetener; the licorice root (the root only) has even been used as food by some cultures. Licorice comes in many different varieties; sweeter than most other forms of candy, licorice can be found in many gourmet coffees, in candy bar form, in pasteurized milk, and even in ice cream.

Licorice has many common ingredients with other plants; it contains a glycyrrhizin (a natural preservative) and an amino acid, glycyrrhizic acid, that are commonly referred to as "licorice salt". These two ingredients make licorice more stable than other sugar alternatives. Licorice also contains a glycyrrhizinase (Glycyrrhizic Acid) that helps to preserve the root for longer shelf-life. Licorice contains a high concentration of Vitamin C, (perfect for the cold weather) and potassium, as well as trace minerals such as magnesium, iron, calcium and phosphorus. The anise oil found in licorice protects and enhances the flavor and aroma of its sweetener.

Licorice's soothing effect on the stomach, particularly in relation to food allergies, makes it a great substitute for onions, garlic and spices. Licorice is a gentle diuretic and a laxative while still retaining its strong nutritive value. It is often combined with chicken or beef blended drinks, honey, or lemon to produce a delicious and unique flavor. Licorice root can be chewed on its own, or used in the same concoction as lemon juice and soda pop or juice combination.

Licorice root is extracted from the flower heads of Glycyrrhiza Glabra, a plant belonging to the mint family. Licorice root was cultivated in ancient China and was first brought to the western world in the 19th century by a French doctor, Louis Pasteur. Licorice root has long been recognized as a natural sweetener that improves digestion, increases the appetite, and decreases gas, bloating and abdominal discomfort. Its primary chemical components are glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhizic acid, all of which have proven medicinal benefits in various human diseases. Licorice root is also an anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic and stomachic agent, which makes it valuable in treating such things as colitis, digestive disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, influenza and even rheumatism.

Among the many notable potential benefits of Licorice root extract is its ability to regulate blood sugar levels and decrease gastrointestinal disorders like candida. The root appears to alleviate the symptoms of diabetes and certain heart ailments. Licorice root extract also boosts the immune system and is believed to suppress tumor growth. Its anti-viral properties are backed up by clinical studies conducted in China, where it was shown to suppress tumor growth in breast cancer patients.

Licorice root extract is considered a safe, gentle, natural substance that has many positive benefits when applied to the skin. Licorice root is a powerful source of glycyrrhizin, an important chemical that promotes healthy hair, skin, nails and gums. Licorice root contains no known toxicity and is considered relatively low-risk when compared to other synthetic sweeteners. Licorice root may also help prevent certain types of cancers, including bladder cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, rectal cancer, colon cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer and throat cancer.
