Licorice Root Extract May Help Treat Eczema

Licorice comes from a tree with an alternate, succulent root. DescriptionLiquorice or glycyrrhizin glabra, the botanical name of Glycyrrhiza serrata, is a perennial flowering plant of the mint family, Liliaceae, in the umbel family, Odontaceae. The flowers are white, bell-like, lavender coloured and quite fragrant, with the distinctive smell of licorice. Glycyrrhiza occurs in a great variety of habitats from wet to dry environments; it grows best in humid tropical areas with good soil, as it has difficulty growing in soil that is too dry.

Its botanical name, Glycyrrhiza serrata, comes from Greek words combining the two names: Glycyrrhiza meaning sweet and ari meaning sweetness. Most of us have heard of licorice and the root (or rhizome) of the plant, but what many of us do not know is that the rhizome of the licorice plant actually contains three times more sugar than the sweetener within the flower. In addition to this, glycyrrhizin has a number of other beneficial qualities: it contains little or no taste, has little or no odour, is a natural diuretic and a stomachic. These properties make it a popular ingredient for numerous medicinal and nutritional products.

Licorice root and glycyrrhizin (glycyrrhizic) are the chief active ingredients of Licorice, and they are obtained separately and combined using different methods. When licorice is in its mature state, it is a powdery substance, which can be compressed into a fine paste. Licorice powder can also be added to alcoholic beverages or tea as a flavouring agent. Licorice can also be bottled or purchased in its loose form.

Licorice can have some very subtle side effects when used in high quantities. It can cause nausea, flatulence, stomach cramps, diarrhea and water retention. These side effects can subside with reduction of the daily dosage. Long-term licorice use can also cause liver damage, and even kidney damage. Long-term licorice use may also lead to the formation of kidney stones and can inhibit testosterone production.

Licorice also contains substances that can prevent or reverse the formation of high blood pressure. Licorice increases sodium and potassium levels in the body, which reduces high blood pressure. It also raises heart rate and stimulates cholesterol production. In addition to its effect on blood pressure, licorice can increase sexual performance. Licorice may also increase energy and stamina.

The effects of licorice seem to be good for the heart, but it is important to note that there is no evidence to support the idea of Licorice being beneficial for the treatment of cancer or heart disease. If you are considering using Licorice for treating any of these problems, be sure to talk with your doctor about the possible hazards. As with any alternative therapies, Licorice needs to be used carefully and should not be used with medications that are known to interact with it.
