Licorice Root Extract May Improve Your Cardiovascular System

Licorice has been a popular candy ingredient since ancient times. Its sweet taste is very enjoyable for many people and it is often used in cooking as well as for making candy bars. Licorice roots are harvested and dried and then ground up into a fine paste. Licorice root extract is often added to products such as candy, to give it that sweet licorice flavor. Licorice candy is a very popular soft candy that is made with dried and crushed Licorice roots. The color, flavor and smell of this candy vary depending on the variety of Licorice used to make the candy and it is also available in different strengths and flavors.

Licorice has proven itself to be beneficial to those suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, migraine headaches, depression, muscle and joint pain and even to people with enlarged prostates. Licorice root extract was shown to be effective against herpes, shingles, genital warts, herpes labialis, hepatitis B and C, and multiple sclerosis. In a double-blind, 14-day, double-visit clinical trial conducted by the National Institute of Health, licorice was shown to relieve the pain associated with periodontal disease by almost half of subjects. This was an impressive result, because previous studies had shown that licorice was ineffective in treating periodontal disease. There were no significant side effects reported by the subjects in the Licorice 2-week study.

Licorice should not be confused with the acid reflux disease treatment 'steroid' drugs. Unlike these over the counter medications, licorice root extract is actually an antacid that works to prevent the stomach from producing too much acid, thereby lessening the heartburn and other symptoms associated with acid reflux. Like any other antacid, this will help if you have the typical symptoms of acid reflux - heartburn, difficulty swallowing, sore throat, and difficulty breathing. If you take licorice on a regular basis (at least once a day), then it should help control your symptoms.

The use of licorice root extract may help treat arthritis, high blood pressure, gout, migraine headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and menstrual disorders. It may also help treat diarrhea caused by insufficient fluid intake. This was the conclusion of a two-week clinical trial conducted by the National Institute of Health. Further studies are needed to confirm these positive results.

Licorice root can also increase your potassium levels. High blood pressure is associated with low potassium levels in the body, and studies have shown that licorice increases potassium levels in the human body. A high potassium level in the body is known to prevent the heart from contracting. Licorice may also lower blood sugar levels and may be helpful for people with diabetes.

Licorice has long been linked with improving the heart rhythm. In a study conducted by the University of Rhode Island, heart rhythm was improved in laboratory rats when they were given licorice supplements three times a day. Another study from the University of Rhode Island even suggested that licorice can improve the function of the thymus gland, which produces a hormone that can reduce the effect of a heart attack. All these positive studies, plus the fact that licorice can improve circulation and improve the function of the kidneys and liver, make licorice a potent weapon against high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and many other diseases and ailments.
