Licorice Root Extract May Reduce Inflammation
Licorice has been used for thousands of years, as a medicinal and diuretic, but it's now gaining a reputation for having anti-aging properties. Licorice extracts have been scientifically proven to stimulate collagen and elastin production in humans, and to improve skin tone. Licorice also seems to boost immunity and help protect the liver. There are many different Licorice products on the market, so let's take a closer look at what you need to do to get your hands on some Licorice and make it part of your daily health regime.

In September, an Italian researcher reported that licorice, or glycyrrhizin (licorice, ) was effective in treating patients with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease.) He reported that 70% of those treated with licorice had significantly improved symptoms of acid reflux, heartburn, and peptic ulcers. The majority of these individuals were taking an over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). This finding is encouraging, as NSAID can cause significant side effects, such as stomach ulceration, bleeding, and liver damage, which can lead to long-term damage and even liver failure.
Licorice in its various forms has been used for hundreds of years as a medicinal treatment in the East. Licorice root was often prescribed to treat smallpox, measles, chicken pox, and diphtheria. Scientific studies carried out in China, Russia, and Germany showed that licorice root extracts caused a significant elevation in the H2O2 enzyme in patients with excessive acidosis. This rise in acid led to marked decreases in mucus production and less bacterial proliferation in the mouth. Licorice extract was also effective in reducing the intensity of chronic diarrhea experienced by children with celiac disease. Studies also suggest that licorice root may ease chronic bronchial asthma, treat postmenopausal women's symptoms, slow down the progression of diabetes, and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease.
Licorice may help treat peptic ulcers and may help prevent the occurrence of peptic ulcers. Several clinical trials have shown that licorice extract produces significant decreases in H. pylori bacteria (the bacterium involved in the formation of stomach ulcers.) Preliminary data also suggest that licorice may help treat inflammatory bowel disease and osteoarthritis and may help prevent certain types of cancers. It is not clear whether these effects are due to the sulfate contents of licorice, or if the herb is capable of affecting a cell's ability to adhere to the surface of the cell membrane. Further research is needed to determine how licorice affects the immune system and whether it has any effect on the risk of cancer.
Licorice may also have significant benefits for patients who are lactose-intolerant. The glycyrrhizin inliches, present in most commercial sweeteners, appear to have a diuretic effect on the kidneys, potentially decreasing urine production and enhancing excretion. Glycyrrhizin has a positive effect on the gastrointestinal tract and inhibits the re-absorption of glucose from the intestine, preventing its storage in tissues and organs. Glycyrrhizin may help prevent the onset of diabetes, reduce cholesterol levels and decrease blood pressure. Further studies are necessary to confirm the possible beneficial effect of glycyrrhizin on cardiovascular health.
Licorice may also be used to treat irritable bowel and gastric disorders. Licorice has been successfully used in the treatment of many diseases, and it is believed to possess some anti-inflammatory properties. For example, licorice extracts have been reported to reduce inflammation in the stomach, possibly reducing the ability of histamine to stimulate the immune system. Licorice may also reduce the duration and the intensity of nausea associated with cancer treatments.
