Licorice Root Extract May Reduce the Effects of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
Licorice has been a popular candy and spice in many countries throughout history, and throughout the world. It is an essential ingredient in candy manufacturing, particularly in sweetened tea and breath mints. Licorice root can also be used as a laxative. Licorice's pleasant flavor makes licorice candy one of America's most favorite sweets.
Licorice is the generic name for Glycyrrhiza glabra, a perennial flowering vine of the mint family, in the mint family, Labiatae, from the root of which a highly sweet, aromatic flavor is extracted. Licorice roots are harvested and dried; they contain glycyrrhizin (licorice's key ingredient) and several molds and yeasts. When mixed with alcohol and carrier oils, licorice extracts are prepared as tea and marketed under many brand names, including licorice candies, licorice tea, licorice juice, licorice tea extract, and licorice root tea. Licorice tea contains no sugars.
Licorice is considered a mild diuretic and mild laxative, with no known side effects when taken as directed. Licorice may help relieve nausea associated with diarrhea or other conditions by improving nutrition and aiding the digestive process. Licorice may also reduce symptoms of high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, and liver disease. Licorice has not been shown to improve the outcome of any cancer treatment.
Licorice, when used as recommended, can relieve pain due to rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory skin conditions, as well as relieving eczema and other skin conditions. Licorice may be useful for treating constipation, but it should be used cautiously for pregnant women and people using certain medications. It should not be taken with alcoholic beverages. Licorice should not be used during periods of depression. Consult with a health care professional before using licorice for menstrual disorders or as a hormonal replacement therapy for menopausal women.
In a study comparing the effects of licorice and milk in a group of children with gastroesophageal reflux disease, the licorice had statistically significant effects on the frequency of reflux episodes (P =.001). The reduction in episodes was found to be significantly better than the effect of milk (P =.001). Further studies are needed to confirm the results for this particular licorice extract. However, the results of these studies indicate that the combination of licorice and milk may be helpful for some people with gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice root) has numerous other beneficial effects in the body. These effects include: improving circulation, improving lymph flow, promoting the function of immune cells, increasing blood sugar levels, improving skin tone, reducing allergies, healing inflammation, and reducing the likelihood of cancer. Licorice root extracts may also help with other health issues such as: insomnia, diabetes, obesity, dental problems, hyperactive bladder, fatigue, hypercalcemia, menopause, oral candidiasis, osteoarthritis, and psoriasis.
