This is because licorice reduces the production of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, such as prostaglandins and amyloids. Prostaglandins cause ulcers and cavities, while amyloids promote ulcers by damaging the mucous membranes that line the mouth. The inflammation caused by these chemicals tends to push the affected area into the pocket where food particles can deposit. This causes ulcers to form in the mouth, called pocketitis, due to the reduction in the amount of lubrication that leads to easy access to the pocket.

Licorice may also be able to prevent the occurrence of heart failure. Licorice lowers blood pressure by increasing potassium levels in the body. Potassium levels are reduced when the sodium levels in the body become too low. High blood pressure can lead to congestive heart failure and lowering the sodium levels in the body may help prevent this from happening. Licorice root products often contain potassium, which makes it an ideal addition to a healthy diet, as it has no calories.
