Licorice comes from a root, Glycyrrhiza Glabra. The Latin name is Glycyrrhiza salicifolia, the word used for licorice being salicylate. Licorice, as we know it today, is a perennial vine, reaching up to five meters or so in height. It has a long, tubular root and produces a thick, whitish stem and leaves. It is a perennial weed found growing wild in damp, marshy areas, preferring damp soil and grassy areas. The majority of licorice plants grow in the tropical South Pacific, and the tree bearing the distinctive yellow-green fruit is indigenous to Britain.

Some other potential benefits of licorice, according to some holistic medicine practitioners, include the reduction of skin blemishes and acne, reduction of premenstrual tension, and the calming effects it has on upset stomachs or depression. Licorice also has an active ingredient called glycyrrhizin, which has been shown to have anti-viral, anti-tumor, and anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies have indicated that licorice extract can also help increase white blood cell count (making the blood more able to fight infection), prevent asthma and reduce irritable bowel symptoms in people with IBS.
