Licorice Root Products

Licorice has been used in China and other parts of Asia for thousands of years. The trade between the Chinese and the Romans brought licorice to Europe with them, as did the various herbs that were used as a sweetening ingredient in European cooking. Today, licorice continues to be a popular sweetener, but does not have the same appeal as it had in the past. Licorice tastes somewhat like raisins, but with a much more delicate and tropical flavor.

Licorice root tends to cause an uncomfortable feeling in the chest and stomach. If this happens to you on a regular basis, you should consider placing a piece of licorice root down your pant leg and wearing a pair of tap water tight shoes. Licorice root causes bloating, but only if the root is crushed or chopped. It is the glycyrrhizin (glycyrrhizic acid) in the root that causes the uncomfortable feeling. Glycyrrhizic acid is a natural citrus acid and helps to neutralize certain gases in the body.

An interesting study recently published in the Journal of American Medical Associationshowly shows that taking a standardized dosage of licorice root extract reduced the risk of patients experiencing mild to moderate acid reflux and heartburn. The standardized dosage of the extract included licorice root, glycyrrhizin (glycyrrhizic acid) and potassium sorbate, which work together to reduce acid production in the stomach by suppressing proton pump inhibitors and histamine receptors. This research is promising, especially when we consider that over-the-counter acid reflux drugs typically treat only symptomatic patients and not the underlying cause. The study's subjects were middle-aged, healthy adults without any known underlying disease who took their recommended daily doses of acid reflux medications for an average of two years.

In another study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, female athletes had lesser incidences of ovarian cancer when consuming licorice regularly. This study showed that licorice has estrogenic effects on the body. One of the compounds in licorice called glycyrrhizin has been proven to inhibit the formation and growth of cells associated with prostate cancer and breast cancer. Licorice may also slow down the progression of skin diseases such as psoriasis and ulcers. Research into the uses of licorice and its plant compounds for skin conditions like eczema and skin ulcers is still in its earliest stages.

Licorice has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and acts as a powerful immunosuppressant in low doses. Licorice may also increase the number of lymphocytes in the blood. Its ability to stimulate immunity could be useful in the treatment of Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhizic acid (GZA), the main components of licorice root, are effective in treating skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. These topical gels may also be used to treat skin infections like candida, yeast infection and abscess.

Licorice root products should contain at least 50 percent glycyrrhizin in order to maximize its therapeutic effect. Licorice should never be taken without consulting your doctor, because some plants contain harmful substances that may cause serious side effects when combined with certain medications. Licorice root products should not be used along with other medicinal drugs or herbal preparations, especially those that contain glycyrrhizin. Also, do not try to combine licorice with alcohol, as it could worsen your respiratory conditions.
