Licorice Root Products
Licorice has been revered for its sweetness ever since the days of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Licorice root is often used in candy bars, especially by children to help them with their sweet tooth. Licorice has an extremely sweet taste; hence the name licorice. And licorice has a number of properties that make it a popular ingredient in candies, including treating cavities, fighting dandruff, improving the skin condition, easing muscle pain and swelling, as well as treating a number of other conditions.
This is why licorice root extract is used by millions of people around the world. It has also recently been proven to benefit people who suffer from acid reflux disease. Licorice has been used to treat patients for several years now. During a recent 2-week study conducted by a major health care institute in Sweden, licorice extract was shown to lower the acid concentration of people who suffer from acid reflux.
The study tested three brands of licorice brands - charged lime, carrageenan, and maca. All three brands had different licorice extracts. The brand with the most potent licorice extract was found to be the one that reduced the acid concentration by the largest percentage (two percent). Licorice, as previously mentioned, has a diverse range of skin conditions, but the study only focused on the most common ones.
The study also tested three brands of commercial lotions - L'Oreal Paris, Neutrogena, and Dove. L'Oreal Paris claimed that its proprietary licorice root extract was beneficial in treating symptoms associated with upper respiratory conditions such as snoring, chest congestion, sore throats, post nasal drip, and poor sleeping. Neutrogena further said that its proprietary "H.pylori blend" was effective in treating two of its main clients: snoring and sleep apnea. And Dove claims that its proprietary "A.pentaphyllum" is useful in treating colds and flu symptoms. None of these brands was found effective for acid reflux.
Next, we looked at two different brands of topical gels - glycyrrhizin and propylene glycyrrhizin. Glycyrrhizin contains glycyrrhizic acid, which is known for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Propylene glycyrrhizin (which does not contain glycyrrhizin) was more effective in the treatment of post-nasal drip due to its ability to prevent the mucus from dripping. However, both glycyrrhizin and propylene glycyrrhizin were finding ineffective for treating common skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, blemishes, whiteheads, and blackheads. In the case of whiteheads and blackheads, however, both brands of topical gels had equal effectiveness.
Finally, we looked at a third brand of Licorice root products - Oxy Cosmetic's VigRX Plus. According to this company, the VigRX Plus can help treat four different common respiratory conditions: post-nasal drip, chronic rhinitis, and sinusitis. It can also help treat athlete's foot, eczema, and shingles. VigRX Plus contained herbal extracts and other plant compounds that are believed to increase oxygenation of the capillaries, which helps increase circulation. As a result, people with respiratory conditions such as post-nasal drip and chronic rhinitis who used Licorice to help treat their problems noticed improvement after taking the product for six weeks.
