Licorice Root Products May Interfere With Several Medications

Licorice has been used since ancient times to treat a number of ailments and conditions. For example, it has been used to treat ulcers, indigestion, kidney stones and oral cavities. Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza Glabra) is the generic name of Glycyrrhiza salicylate, a tubular flowering plant of the licorice bean family, in the seed of which a bitter, fruity flavouring can be extracted, resulting in a number of products including candies, candy syrup, lemonade and soda pop. Licorice and candy store products are perhaps the best known products associated with licorice. Licorice has a reputation for being a safe, natural remedy for a variety of health conditions.

Licorice, considered to be beneficial for treating coughs and sore throats, has also been used to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), depression, asthma, colitis, constipation, diarrhea, headaches, insomnia, nausea, PMS, urinary frequency and sexual dysfunction. Licorice has also been used in Chinese medicine to treat symptoms such as fever, palpitations, lack of appetite, backache, soreness and swelling of extremities. It is believed to be effective in treating anxiety, depression and other mental disorders. It is widely accepted that licorice root extract may have a role to play in the treatment of various cancers. It has been reported that licorice extract has an anti-tumor effect and some evidence suggests that it may also be effective in reducing the growth of cancerous tumors.

Licorice may cause some serious side effects if it is taken in large quantities or over a long period of time. Licorice may cause vomiting, diarrhoea and bloating of the abdomen due to the high content of glycyrrhizin and saponin, a sugar. In extremely rare cases, licorice may cause severe liver malfunction and may even lead to pancreatic cancer.

Licorice may also cause a mild sedation because of its stimulant effect. This can affect the central nervous system and cause dizziness or fainting. It may also cause serious improvements in glucose control. However, studies indicate that licorice root extract has no effect on blood sugar levels and it does not affect insulin production or action.

Licorice may interfere with several medications used to treat diabetes. It may even slow the effectiveness of insulin. The glycyrrhizin in licorice can inhibit or prevent the absorption of important medications such as diuretics, antimalarials, sedatives and antidepressants. Licorice may also inhibit the action of certain anticonvulsants. Other medications that fall under this category include lithium, antispasmodics, and antihistamines.

Many diabetics take medications for their blood pressure. While these drugs are effective for people taking them to control their diabetes, they should not be used by diabetics who are taking other medications for which they are not prescribed. This is because diabetics are already having problems with blood pressure control and increased risk of diabetes complications. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that diabetics and people take licorice root products avoid using any of these medications when treating their condition.
