Further studies are needed to confirm the safety and efficacy of this herb in the management of acid reflux and GERD.
In tests on animals, licorice root extract may protect human cells from radiation damage. Radiation therapy kills off healthy cells. Licorice extract reduced toxicity of doses of radiation by more than 40%, according to the conclusion of a British study published in Clinical Nutrition. Further studies are required to confirm the antineoplastic properties of this herb. It is also believed that the herb has strong antioxidant properties.
The herb is sold in the form of tea, pills and extracts in most health food stores. Licorice root supplements are available at reasonable prices over the counter.
