Licorice Treatments

Licorice has been in existence for thousands of years. Its traditional medicinal and aromatherapy uses are well known and documented. In the United States, licorice is a popular addition to many candy bars and has recently started to gain popularity as an alternative energy drink. Licorice and candy manufacturers alike know licorice's effectiveness as an antiseptic and deodorant. What is less well-known is that licorice has significant antibacterial properties and may help treat some common stomach ulcers.
Licorice, or glycyrrhizin (licorice) as it is also known, is a member of the sugar cane family, Cucurbitaceae. Description of the sweet, sour root (Glycyrrhiza Glabra, ) by the ancient Romans, described it as "arguable, white, small, fat, rough, green, juicy and ready to use." Licorice has been used as a sweetener, an antihistamine, an expectorant, and a diuretic.
Modern research has shown licorice to have many health benefits. Licorice contains a glycyrrhizin A derivative with antibiotic activity. It has been shown to prevent infection and aid digestion. Licorice reduces swelling and pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, colitis, diverticulitis and gastritis. In tests licorice has demonstrated to have anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial activity.
Licorice may also be used to control nausea and control vomiting. The glycyrrhizin inlicoriceate, a derivative of glycyrrhizic acid, appears to normalize elevated blood glucose levels. It appears to prevent the development of kidney stones and gallstones. Some studies suggest that licorice may have a beneficial effect on cholesterol and triglycerides, and increase HDL (good) cholesterol levels.
Licorice extracts are available in a variety of commercial forms. They are sold in powder, in liquid or in a tea. Licorice tea has a licorice flavor, but does not contain the glycyrrhizin A. Licorice tea should be taken at least three to four hours before or after a meal.
Licorice may also be used in gels and lotions. Licorice can also be used as a skin condition treatment. The skin treated with licorice seems to be less irritated than the skin of someone not using licorice. Licorice may be a promising potential treatment for the treatment of cancer. Licorice may help regulate blood sugar and may slow or stop tumor growth.
Licorice has a number of industrial uses as well. Licorice is often added to adhesives, oils, leather conditioners, solvents and paint protection products. Licorice may even be added as a sweetener to some soft drinks and snacks. Licorice is added as a sweetening ingredient to some infant formulas.
Licorice root may be taken in its root form, in a pill or in a tea. The pill form is the purest licorice extract available and usually contains 50 percent licorice root. The licorice in the root form cannot be separated from the glycyrrhizin glycoside, the main active ingredient in licorice. Because licorice is bitter, it must be consumed in the extract form.
Licorice root is available at health food stores and online. You can also buy it in powder form. Be sure to mix it thoroughly before drinking. Before using it, be sure to mix licorice with water to dissolve the sugar and not water with licorice. Before using it on open cuts, be sure to rinse the area first.
