Medicinal Uses of Mint
Mint candies come from the Aladdins, or mint plants, family of the mint plant. mint is a sweet aromatic perennial plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae. The exact difference between mint and Cayenne pepper is unclear; it's estimated that only 13 to 24 distinct species exist worldwide. Hybridization between some common species happens naturally where some varieties overlap. Most mints are eaten raw or used as an ingredient in candy, cookies and chewing gum.
Mint is used in cooking and in medicine as well. As an herbal remedy for cough and cold symptoms, mint is used in some form in virtually every culture. Some commercial mint products on the market contain both the aromatic oils and the menthol that produce the pleasant odor.
Essential oils from the mint are readily available and widely used. They are often used topically on a wide variety of diseases, infections and other disorders. Dried mint extract has been used in gels, lotions and creams for decades. A dry mouth is also remedied by a simple mixture of dried mint leaves and honey. A more interesting use of the oil from mint is in making candles. Commercial grade candle wax is mixed with a small amount of the oil extract and then heated to produce candle wax that has a very pleasant natural aroma.
Mint tree scents are used in a wide variety of perfumes, deodorants, shampoos and even soaps. One type of perfume that uses mint is Calvin Klein's Minted Body Shampoo. The scent of fresh mint is combined with other essential oils and is used in this product. Minty fresh scented candles made by Scents of Life in California include a range of "Minted Candles", each one with a different aroma. Calvin Klein's My Minted Life brand of soap also makes use of mint, as do many other popular brand names such as Dial, Dove and Colgate Palmolive.
Mint is also a prominent ingredient in some herbal remedies, especially those that have a medicinal action. Mint is often added to teas or made into an infusion for teas that have a medicinal action. Mint is also used in skin care products, particularly after shaving. It is believed that mints can help relieve itching and redness. Mint leaves can be dried and made into a refreshing drink.
In addition to these uses, fresh peppermint has many other health benefits. Peppermint oil is an effective remedy for cough and colds, and can also relieve irritations of the digestive system. Mint is often added to recipes that need to be refrigerated because it contains natural ice. Mint tea has a delightful flavor and is quite refreshing when used in combination with other flavors, although it is not recommended to drink mint tea cold.
