Mint

Mint candy has been around for a long time. It was first sold as a sweet, white, bitter-sweet confectionary by unknown traders in 1693. The sweet, milky, gooey, refreshing candy has remained popular and is still popular today. Some candy stores sell the candy in bags, baskets, or boxes. One type of packaging is called a "mint tins" and comes in a variety of colors: red, blue, black, white, and yellow.

DescriptionThe family mint is one of those familiar botanicals with a seemingly infinite number of uses, including cough drops, lip balm, tea, toothpaste, and mints. The common name for mint is Mentha. Mentha is an aquatic genus in the mint family, Lamiaceae. The exact difference between various species is unclear; however it is believed that seven to twenty species still exist. Hybridization usually takes place naturally, where species from different genera interbreed. Many varieties and hybrid forms are now known.

LocationThe most common place to grow mint is in containers. Leaves and flowers can be propagated easily in containers on top of the soil in the garden. The best spot for a mint plant is a shady spot with low roots. Mint grows very well in southern States, particularly Florida and Texas, but will grow in other states as well. Mint is used both as a fresh and dried herbal ingredient in tea, candy, and breath mints.

Botanical NameThe botanical name, mint, is derived from the Greek word mintos which means "of the mint plant". Mint is one of the most widely used and beneficial herbs. It has been a medicinal herb since ancient times and today it serves a variety of purposes. It is an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, stomachic, and digestive aid.

UsesThe uses of mint continue to increase as science advances. In the United States mint is the most popular flower used in candy bars and in sauces, and a few drops of it on baked potatoes make a sweet treat. Fresh mint is excellent in cooking - as a salad ingredient, combined with tomatoes or cucumbers, added to soups, and used to flavor fish and poultry dishes. Fresh thyme, fresh Rosemary, and crystallized mithoulume are all excellent as home remedies. Mint is also excellent in making candy assortments, including white frosting, and in candy coated cookies.

Mint is one of the most versatile of the English herbs. In fact, the generic name, mint, means "little leaf". Mint grows in full sun to partial shade in most areas of North America. Mint has become an essential plant for many gardens, in both the formal flowery type (round blossoms) and the herbaceous variety (plants with fleshy green leaves).
