"Nerds Rope" (Movie Review)
"Nerds Rope" is a very fun film from the early 1990's. Two nerdy college kids (played by Nicholas Cage and Carrie Fisher) spend their free time riding around in a toy train. Soon, they become more than just toy train enthusiasts as they stumble upon a strange fruit that turns them into candy men! What starts out as a wild comedy ends up being a journey into the depths of childhood as they explore this mysterious and forbidden land.
The plot of the movie revolves around two nerdy, but loving, guys who become involved with this crazy new craze. One of them (Cage's character) goes so far as to sneak some poison ivy into a local sweet shop to get a supply of Nerds Rope. Naturally, the shopkeeper suspects something is wrong and calls the police. Before they can react, however, a storm rages through the city killing over a dozen citizens. With the help of a strange elderly man (Francois de Cloos), the friends of Cage escape while the candy-coated old man recovers in the hospital.
The movie is filled with excellent special effects and a fantastic soundtrack. The best scene is probably when the old man recovers from his wounds in the hospital and enters his old house (which is now called the "Nerds Rope Workshop") with boxes of Nerds Rope scattered about. The three characters also enjoy wandering around the city trying to locate the only store in town that sells Nerds Rope. While this is a comical scene, it is also a great way for Nicholas Cage to show off his comedic acting skills. It is a funny bit, which also helps introduce the viewer to the various forms of candy, including the various shapes and colors used to make the Nerds Rope.
Although not a particularly exciting film, "Nerds Rope" does provide its viewers with some entertainment. It is entertaining to watch Nicholas Cage act out various characters, especially those roles he has already portrayed (like Mr. T, Buzz Lightyear and the villainous Doctor Death). However, there are very few scenes that will take the imagination and appreciation that the audience may have for the original series of "Mystery Science" shows. Most of the humor derives from the interactions between Cage's three main characters.
For parents, the most enjoyable aspect of the film would be the interaction between mother and daughter. They bond over their shared interest in Nerds. While they are each humorous in their own unique way, they rarely go on to reveal their love of Nerds for other viewers. If you are a parent with young children, or even a grandparent who wishes they had more grandchildren, you might wish that you knew more about Nerds. This film provides an entertaining glimpse of what we don't often see in kids' films.
Overall, "Nerds Rope" is a fun film that promotes the enjoyment of Nerds. Although it is geared towards a younger audience, the message is universal for all ages. This makes it a perfect family film for those parents who are not familiar with the history of Nerds or those that are just curious as to how the film industry came to produce such a comedic gem. As a result, "Nerds Rope" should appeal to people of all ages, regardless of age, gender, or cultural affiliation.
