Old School Retro Candy - What's Hot, What's Not?

When you go to retro candy stores, you are not just going to get sweet treats that have made their way into your childhood: you are going to get sweet treats that have created nostalgia for millions of people. Sweet treats that have made their way into your heart and made you smile when you see them. And if there isn't a lump in your throat when you look at those designs on the box, there probably is a good reason - these are sweets you grew up with! The nostalgic sweet treats of yesterday are still around, and they are making our childhood memories come alive. Here's a few of the best retro candy treats from yesteryear that people love today.

The M&M's (Maple, Pistachio, and Nuts) are all-time favorites around since their inception. Vexed by the high-energy of the holiday season, candy bar makers took advantage of the opportunity to create super sweets around Valentine's Day and other popular celebrations. While many of these treats became collector's items in their own right, others became beloved retro candy bar options around since the 1970s. Many candy companies saw the opportunity to make retro versions of their most loved sweets around since the childhood of countless children. M&Ms are around since the very first candy bar, and they have not changed much since. People always seem to be pleased when they open a can of this creamy, gooey goodness.

Candy pieces that became associated with a specific decade are even better treats. We are so familiar with popcorn, nuts, cookies, candy apples, and other favourites that come from decades ago that it's hard to imagine anyone who grew up without sweets. And to think that the once all-favourite old school candy store is going out of business. It was a baker's dream to start his or her own candy store in their neighbourhood, and they did - back in 1908! So how do you feel about old fashioned candy being made again? Is it exciting to be able to relive your childhood memories of licking sugar cubes?

Candy has long been associated with childhood and fun - and retro sweets have long been associated with fun too. There was a time when there was no thought of the commercial appeal of the candy that we are used to enjoying today. Candy Popcorn from the 1920s to the 1970s was the norm, and if you're lucky, there's a chocolate pop rock in your neighbourhood that was produced the same year. The only problem with these retro sweets is that while they are nostalgic, they are also sometimes rather expensive.

Another top 20 retro candy treat is Wax Lips. Did you know that back in the fifties, people were using wax lips? People would dip white bread sticks in melted butter and place them on their lips, then pull off the stick so that the wax could easily come out. Then, they would lick the stick clean before eating it! There was even a perfume for it, called "Wax Lips."

If you're not interested in those popular styles and don't want to shell out that much money for wax lips, then perhaps you'd like to try chewing on a candy cane. Yep, those things still exist! One thing you should note about these treats though, is that the longer you hold a piece of gum in your teeth, the more bitter the taste becomes. This is because when you chew on the stick of gum, the saliva which is in your mouth helps to break down the sugars of the candy. While a candy cane was a very popular treat in our childhood, it isn't as popular nowadays.

If you really want to get into the mood, you can head over to the local retro candy store. Here, you'll be able to find the very first production of caramel lollipops, and other retro style candy that wasn't sold in standard candy bars. Most of the designs that you'll find here have the classic candy colours of red, green, yellow, and orange - with some unusual designs in place of the gumball eyes. If you love retro candy, then this is definitely the place for you to go!

If you want something a little different, then you might also want to head over to an old school candy store. They'll have a wide array of different sweets in different designs, which will remind you of the good old days. Many of these sweets are handmade, so you know you're getting high quality products.
